My First DSLR??

On my way to my first DSLR!
birthday in a week and a DSLR is my present.
any ideas for a good quality dslr thats not too expensive?:)

wow! you are just like me. i was looking for an SLR for 4 months (september-december) my birthday was two weeks before christmas and altogether i ended up with £550. i was dead set on getting canon 450d and in the end i went for sony a300. but through all those months i went through the nikon d60 d80 canon 450d 100d olymus 510 etc and i could not decide. i haven't got big hands and the sony felt so sturdy and strong as if could take the occasional bump whereas the 450d was light and flimsy felt like a little bump would puncture the body lol. in my advice get a sony a300 or get an a200 and get the twin lens kit.
 
The D60 is well regarded...Cheap in Jessops atm and has Nikon cashback so should be £349 net. Leaves you £51 for anything else you need...e.g. bag, sd cards etc.

This is a great camera with a good kit lens.

Is £40 cheaper if you go for the non-VR lens, but the VR one will be better.

Best bet though, is to go to somewhere like Jessops and try them all, and see which you like the handling of best too.

I would suggest that most of the current mainstream brands would do you fine - ie Nikon, Canon, Sony etc. What you really need to do is go to a camera shop and handle the choices. Although they will all give good quality photo's and have pro's and con's with regard to features it is how they feel in your hand that really matters.

I was dead set on getting a Canon but as soon as I picked up a Nikon it just felt right and that was it.

Remember also that you are buying into a system and if you have some kind of idea where your photography may be heading you can look at the potential costs :eek::eek::eek:

Don't also discount second hand. There are some really good bargains to be had if you have an idea of what you want. Have a look at the for sale forum on here for some ideas:shrug:

tractor boy is right i was the same with getting a canon but the sony felt stronger. in other words you never know what you might get so handling is a big importance.:)
 
Don't forget to budget for the extras like:

SD/CF cards, Bag, Lens Cleaning kit and the obligatory Understanding Exposure book by Bryan Peterson :D
 
Hi have just spent a few weeks shopping around, I have also gone for sony alpha , the a300 had 40 quid cash back in january, which you might still be able to get if you went into store (jessops) on monday?

That takes it down to 299.00 for a 10.1mp dslr is pretty incredible. there is also a two lens bundle for 470 with the cash back netting to you at 430.00.

Like someone said though cards a case filters and maybe a tripod going to cost at least a hundred. which is what about what i spent.

I am a newbie as well so iam no expert about the quality of the pictures it can take. However specs wise its head to head with the canon 450d, which has more megapixels, but with 10 mp on the sony thats not an issue really.

the canon 450d would also be over your budget as well you would have to go for the 1000d to stay under budget.

there are a few sony users like stan on here who told me the a300 is a great camera.

Have a look at the Pentax/samsung offerings too...

The Samsung GX10/Pentax K10D can still be found new and is a significant step-up from the entry level offerings..

You've really got to try them out in your hand.

I recently got my first DSLR and was going to get a Canon but as soon as I picked it up (400D) I just knew it wasn't right, I ended up with a Nikon D60. The Pentax and Sony felt really good too but were a little big for the wife's hands.
