...at off camera flash (with my new 580EXII).

I am very new to flash photography in general and my knowledge is very limited (other than reading a lot online) so I would really like to hear any constructive criticism you guys have. If I were to comment myself I would say that the shadow on my nose isn't great. Anyway... here goes....

without going into technicalities since i know very little myself i think its a really good photo

I like it but it looks like you're got too much exposure int he shadow on the side of his face - it looks a bit grey and horrible.

Essentially you have a good, moody portrait setup there, I like it :) If you're looking at shooting in b&W where white balance isn't an issue, try mixing a bit of low-power flash with say, a desk lamp on the background. You might get some interesting gradients, plus, it gives you an extra light to play with :)

Thanks for the replies.

I see what you mean about the exposure on the shadow side, specialman. I think this is partly because there was a fair amount of ambient light and I didn't set the aperture correctly for it.

Am I right in thinking that upping the aperture and increasing the flash output would yield a similar result but with a darker shadow on the left?

Yep, got it in one :) Just try to keep that shadow on the black side of things, as near black as you can get.
