Yes
Well, expensive to me anyway.
Went to asda last night, everything was fine....

My wife went to take our daughter to a party this morning about 2 miles away....When she got there, she phoned me and said "the steering is really heavy, like there's no power steering".

I told her to come home and I checked it...sure enough...PAS not working. So I popped the bonnet and checked the reservoir...empty.
Looked where the car was parked overnight....uh oh....that's a patch of fluid :(

Got a friend to come round with a pair of ramps, and he had a look and said it seems it might be leaking from the steering rack (a google suggests its a known fault). The only place I found on the net that sells them, is quoting 200 quid for one :'(. Topped it up again this afternoon and the reservoir hasnt lost any for some reason (yet).
MIght give that radweld type stuff (but for PAS systems a try)....

Why does it always happen at the wrong time...I think I might try and trade it in, see what I can get for it. Anyone wanna buy a Megane Scenic? 97 1.9 TD? :D

Keep some spare fluid in the boot and a close eye on the level, don't drive any distance till you're sure it's fixed.

I'll pass on buying the car thanks, but might be a good idea to trade it if you can.

Depending on what its actually worth go to one of these places that offer you a grand for you old car as part exchange no matter what and see what they have in place.

Not the best news but at least nobody has been hurt and you've caught it now rather than on a motorway.

radweld for power steering stuff??? never heard of it

Any ways hope you sort it dude.

s***ty news Marcel ... and on top of your move and everything ... not good m8 ...

Still ... hope your cheap 'n cheerful fix works ... for the time being at least ...

:p

i suggest putting tiny little skinny wheels on the front and fitting a non assisted rack.

problem solved

or you could do it in true manc style and weld on a new front end :D

/runs

could be worse marcel, could have moved and left me to install new software on server.....

time to ring round the breakers and find a good one off the shelf you can fit...

Places that offer a grand for a part ex. generally overcharge for the cars they are selling by a grand anyway. Either that or higher than average miles for the money.
Can't the leak in the steering rack be fixed without the need for a new rack. Sounds like just a seal gone to me.

:agree:

Have a shuftie to find where the leak is. Might take you a day to remove strip and refit the seals, but then you'll be certain that the jobs done right, plus you'll have saved a packet. It's not just the 200notes for the part, but also the labour you'll get stung for if you do it at a garage.

Except that's all a marketing con.

They say "Up to £1,000 for your old car whatever its condition" - so they can legitimately offer you fifty quid for it and there's nothing you can do. They'll only offer you a grand if your car is worth more than that at resale.

£200 is ridiculous for a steering rack.
I'm sure you could get one for £25-£40 from a scrapyard. A search on 'Megane breaking' on ebay brings a few up. Also there are a number of scrapyards that do online advertising and delivery.
I've pretty mch kept my car on the road for 18 months now using ebay sourced scrap parts!

Yeah scrap parts is the way to go. I needed a new starter for my ancient clio and there was an online form where I put in what I needed for what kind of car. Within 2 hours I had 15 quotes and got an awesome price that included delivery.
