Just need to vent off here so excuse me!
My 300F4L IS was having problems with its autofocus. It would just hunt and not lock onto anything. So i took it to my local camera shop where they were to send it off to a Canon approved repairer. 2 weeks later i get a call from the camera shop to say that the repairer has been in touch and that the lens needs a new focusing unit and this is gonna cost 277quid. So i tell them to go ahead with the repair (even though im skint but i need it fixing!). So now 4 weeks have passed since then and today i get a call from the camera shop to say that the repairer has now discovered that the lens also needs a new image stabiliser! Huh? There was nothing wrong with the IS! Anyway the total of fixing both the focusing mechanism and the IS is now gonna be 390quid! I can live without the IS to be honest i just want the bloody autofocus to work again.
So im ****ed off on several fronts. 1) In my opinion theres nothing wrong with the IS otherwise i would have noticed it unless its linked to the autofocus? 2) In total ive been without the lens for 6weeks and they havent even started to fix it yet(is this normal to fix a lens?) and 3) What has the repairer been doing in the 4weeks between first saying that it was the focusing motor which needed fixing (which i was expecting) to now saying that the IS is knackered aswell (which as far as im concerned there is b****r all wrong with)? I hope they can just fix the focusing motor as thats what i need fixing the most and leave the IS as it is! But most importantly of all i need this lens fixed asap!

But how does the IS interfere with the focusing? Surely its separate no?

If the IS lens group is not aligned correctly, the AF sensors will never be able to get a suitable lock.

Maybe send it to Canon Elsetree directly. They should know what is wrong with it and might do a better job. If you are a CPS member the turnaround should be about one week max.
