My Camera/Lens for sunday league football

I have a game frida night at a pitch with floodlights for the final, i was wondering would my camera and lens be suitable, or even good enough?

I have a canon 550d with a EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS ZOOM 55-250 mm Lens

Iv only had the camera a few day and i dont really know what settings to use or how to even change the settings as i just use the modes at the minute, sport, portrait, close-up etc.

Please help.
 
Not too sure about the camera as I shoot with a Sony. You will struggle with shutter speeds with the lens you have. I would suggest you use your highest ISO setting with the lens wide open and see what shutter speed you get. Try and shoot the players running towards you as this will stop/reduce motion blur. Most of the guys on here would also suggest setting the camera on manual when shooting under flood lights.
 
Unfortunately, you will really struggle with your camera set-up under floodlights. I had a game last week under poor floodlights at a non-league ground and was shooting at ISO 6400 and 1/250 at f2.8. Photos were workable but not great - binned most of them. As your lowest aperture is f4 it won't give you are decent shutter speed even if you have the ISO at it's highest setting.

I'm sorry, but with that kit you have little to no chance of getting anything particularly good.:( The best thing you can do is use Aperture Priority (AV) mode on your camera, set your lens to it's shallowest (smallest) possible aperture (4 - 5.6) and set your ISO to the highest value your camera will allow and just do the best you can. Don't be disheartened if you find your shots aren't good enough, it won't be your fault, your kit just doesnt have the capabilities.
 
Well i've got a sunday league game today at 6 o clock, can someone please help me how to change the settings i have no idea whats so ever. :(

I've got modes on the camera, sports, portraits, landscapes etc, i thought you would just use the sport mode, but with people telling me to change the iso etc it's become a tad confusing.

I know if i switch the button on the top right around you can change the iso etc but do i keep it on that setting how do i change them all to the right settings and have them all there?

Isnt there like a custom mode?
 
I wouldn't give up on using the camera/lens combination, you can still get usable photos.

You won't be able to do the traditional close up on the action shots, as others say, you just won't have the shutter speed. You've just got to think a little bit differently, try to capture the scene rather than the action.

One shot I'd try is to stand behind the goal line when a goal kick is being taken. Use a fairly wide angle and you can capture the width of the field, the far floodlights shining down on it, and the spread of players across it. When I had gear similar to yours I tried that, ended up with a shot that was good enough and got published.

For tonight either leave the camera at home and enjoy the match, or wack it into Sports mode, accept that the mjority of your photos will be iffy at best, and just go for it.

Tomorrow read your camera manual from front to back cover.

On Thursday repeat the above.

On Friday go to the tuorials section on here and start reading about exposure and camera settings.


You are trying to sprint before you can sit upright (let alone run before you can walk), and the end result will be frustation. It would be far better to learn the basics and build on them, rather than rush into things.
 
If you could help me on how to change the shutter speed that would be great, i dont have the manual on me at the minute.

Cant knock the guys ambition but my gut feeling is it's a major wind up. AH well, I could do with a giggle anyway.

Im sure you will be fine with the pics Jamie, can't wait to see them on the back page of the papers :cuckoo:

If it's the same Mark I'm thinking of, I think I've spotted him, could be wrong though, it has been known (sort of :lol:)
