Locked Grooves...

I've recently dug out my old-school analog hifi kit, and been working my way through a few old classics. Last night I hit a track and remembered one of the things bands used to do to mess with our heads.

Playing Atom Heart Mother, listened to Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, and after about 5 minutes of the tap dripping at the end remembered...

there ensued a bit of a flashback (not the first triggered by Floyd, I'm sure...), followed by a frantic search through my collection for other tracks that do that...

Came up with

High and Dry (Def Leppard)
Fly by NIght (Rush) - though apparently the modern remasters have the sounds fading out eventually instead.

and I think that Plastic Surgery Disasters (Dead Kennedys) has one, but the album's still in my storage location so can't verify it...

Anyone else name some more - i'm sure I remember a "special edition" one of my bandmates had that had 2 bonus tracks, but they were "locked off" so you had the option to play the album as originally intended, and then you could "jump" over to the extra tracks.

IIRC, there's a Hawkwind album whose centre groove repeats "If you want to get in to it, you've got to get out of it." BUT, that may have been a figment of an overstimulated imagination...

I am sat here cursing you (TheBigYin) at the moment. your post has made me think of a record in my collection that doesn't end as such and you just get the "crackle" of the end of the record, but I can't think what record it was or even if it was a single or an album. More frustrating is I can't currently play any of my vinyl collection.

I lost my Atom Heart Mother LP years ago after stupidly lending it to someone. Damn!
I don't have any like this, but I do have a Beatles album - Abbey Rd? - with an unlisted track at the end: "Her Majesty"

We have been enjoying playing some of my old vinyl recently, and buying some new too. Much nicer than CD's.

Hawkwind - In Search Of Space has the sound of waves crashing at the end of You Know You're Only Dreaming (I think...)
(again, albums in storage so can't verify it...)

Googling If you want to (etc.) show it to be track 4 on "Choose your masques" rather than the central circle. Just seemed to go on forever!!!

...Just seemed to go on forever!!!
I remember going to see Hawkwind live back in iirc 1984 - think I was the only person in Sheffield City Hall not on anything mind-altering, and the entire gig seemed to go on forever.

Was very much a "well, I aught to go see them, jsut to say I have" kind of gig for me I'm afraid. Only track I enjoyed was the encore - Silver Machine - and I'm not sure if it was because I knew that it was all over after it finished...

On ELO's album 'Out of the blue', the track 'Mr Blue Sky' ends and the electric organ kinda sings and say's "Please turn me over". Cool.

At home awaiting a call to say my new(to me) deck is ready for collection, posted the old deck away to its new owner on Monday morning so listening to CDs at the mo, easier to do but not the same as flipping the disc and settling back in the chair for side 2.

I used to love Hawkwind, but it sounds like you missed their golden years in the 70s when they featured the unforgettable Stacia Blake. :) I saw them lots of times back then. I say “saw”, it was always through a thick haze of dope smoke.

What's odd is that these days, when I'm just hearing music, it sounds much better than when I try to properly listen to it - my hearing's deteriorated so much over the years that I can't actually hear what's there but when I'm just hearing it, my brain fills in all the notes I've lost!

now that's quite a new toy...

I'm experiencing quite the opposite, i'm happy to say - I was worried that the age related degradation and playing in a band related mild tinnitus would mean I was wasting my time with "proper" sound - but I dunno if its that I'm "actively" listening to things again, or if the clarity and overall tighter "resolution" of the sound compared with the (probably) badly ripped and under-sampled / over compressed mp3's that I've been tolerating for past 10 years or more just means that there's "more music getting through the cloth ears".

Either way, i'm kind of loving it.

I think if i'd have had the same experience as you, I probably wouldn't have gone down this rabbit hole - as it was, I was at the point of not really caring about music anymore - which is odd for someone who's life was pretty much defined by my musical tastes from the age of 13 or so - I mean, even now, if you look at me, there may as well be a 10 foot neon sign above my head saying "old rocker".

Now, I need to work out some form of home-friendly storage for my music collection - had a quick nosey around at my storage unit, and it seems I've nearer 1300LP's and over 300CD's that need to be housed somehow. That's way beyond what I can store in my living room and it still look like a living room rather than a record store - so I'm thinking that the spare bedroom is going to get a few extra Ikea Wardrobes, retrofitted with heavier, more solid shelving - I don't really want the bedroom to become a music store either... Then I can at least have a "temporary storage" with the HiFi for the stuff I play over and over, plus anything I've dragged out of the archives.

Vinyl?

About 3 years ago I had about 50 records a mix of 12in singles and LPs from back in the late 70 early 80s, was always going to be"get rid of them as no one listens to them anymore" BUT I didn't so now I have slowly upgraded my deck, amp and speakers, need to get a CD player (I have one but it is borrowed off a friend) and also looking at MC cartridges.

As for records? I now have more than 400 now, some been given to me but most I have acquired from Antique stores and Record Fairs, many of them it's "why did I not buy them when they were new".

Also discovered new things because I have a tendency to look at an album cover and go "that looks nice, it's cheap, lets buy it and see" I now cover Jazz, 80s Electronica, Rock and Prog Rock, Easy Listening, Kraut Rock and some strange French Techno music I picked up because, well why not?

Also have a fair few CD's knocking about plus stuff on Spotify, so I think I have many bases covered

My hearing loss stems from my days as a bouncer and earplugs weren't an option - we needed to keep eyes and ears open for trouble! Loud bikes and playing in a band dulled what was left, even though ear plugs did get worn then. I still enjoy music but rarely sit down to properly listen these days, just letting the brain fill in the missing frequencies when old favourites crop up on the car radio. My MP3 player has a decent built in graphic equaliser so I've set it up to boost the highs. Works well enough with noise cancelling in-ear phones on plane trips! The tinnitus is just something that has to be lived with.

When I got my first set of hearing aids 11/12 years ago I went home and put some music on, thankfully it sounded better with them than before. This is my second TT purchase in the last 20 months after many years of not having one, hopefully I won’t feel the need to update until it needs serviced again in 5years ish, it already has a couple of nice upgrades, but still bedding in the cartridge. Wife was convinced the record cleaning machine was a waste and a gimmick until she saw what came out the tank when I flushed it out after around a hundred of so albums-used and new- before and after listening was the clincher.

My hearing aids make a big difference to my tinnitus as a bonus, worth getting checked.

Had hearing aids for several years and while they improve my hearing, they're not perfect and can't replace the lost frequencies, just boost the ones that are going! They don't make any difference to my tinnitus either.

They still look great and no doubt sound great.
Happy so far, the alternative* I was looking was a couple-or so-grand more and SWMBO wasn’t convinced it(or me) was worth it.

VPI Prime 21.

It took a wee while but my LP12 is here, testing it with some Satriani.

Good to see these are still available. I got mine something 0ver 40 years ago and it's still in use. I added an electronic PSU with push button 33/45rpm selection. The Linn replaced a Garrard downstairs and the Garrard moved upstairs where it is also still in use.

You can still get new Linn equipment of all kinds and spares are available for older kit for servicing, fortunately I have a great local dealer, not what I went in to buy but it had just been traded in, a deal was offered and herself liked the look over the new modern funky stuff I’d gone to look at, and I saved a couple of grand.

i had a LP12 back in the mid 80's with an Alphason HR 100s arm and audio technica cartridge which sounded wonderful but gave up on vinyl some years ago now and the LP12 is long gone
most of my listening is done via CD nowadays i can't be bothered with streaming it does nothing for me

I have a few friends with tons of records and they still enjoy them but complain bitterly about the costs of needles and maintenance.
mate has a very old sondek that recently needed a new bearing and boy did that sting , also his MC cart needed a new armature another extensive reaming. A friend Peter who lives up in Perth has purchased a posh sound card so he can digitally record all his rare stuff and is slowly working through it.

I was a bit late to records so slipped straight to CDs and then when they came about SACD which has been my mainstay , but still have a large collection of Dance and Trance 12" stuff which I guess I will get rid of this year, most of which I have managed to get on FLAC format now so its all good.

Ah Vinyl, A media i am too young to have experienced in its glory days. I was born the same year the CD was released iirc. Having said that, I have started a small but somewhat ecleptic collection. I think my age has got me digging through what samples were used in the music of my youth and now enjoying the original music. I love discecting music looking at its origins and its influences.

I dont have anything elaborate in terms of a vinyl setup. Space and time i can actually listen to it influences how much i am willing to spend on it and lord knows its a rabbit hole once you delve into it.
