Mup mode

Normally the mirror moves up in unison with the shutter (not quite true but easier to think of it like this) when you take a picture. The mirror assembly is quite bulky and can cause a bit of camera movement when it moves up which can lead to a little motion blur in some pictures, particularly in the 1/50 to 1 sec sort of exposure range. MUp separates the mirror movement from the shutter movement. With it enabled, the first press of the shutter button moves the mirror up, the second fires the shutter. The idea being that the vibration caused by the mirror movement is dealt with before the shutter is fired.

How useful it is will depend on technique. For very long exposures, the movement caused by the mirror will form such a small fraction of the total exposure time that it will be negligible. If you're not using a remote release, the movement of the camera from physically pressing the shutter will likely be far more significant than that of the mirror. If you use fast shutter speeds, it'll be negligible. If you're using live view, you're effectively locking the mirror up anyway. Personally I use it quite a lot but more through habit than always out of necessity. If working on a tripod with a remote release, it's a case of why not, rather than why.
