I have always treated MSN as spawn of the devil type software but tempted now the older kids are now on it. So I can say stuff like "Come downstairs, your tea's ready!"

Are my fears justified or is this now a fairly mature product?

Na its alright if used properly, Its great for sending photographs and so on.

Why is it that on every forum, there is regularly a thread made called "MSN Problems" or something similar.

Because they can't ask their online friends via MSN :bonk:
