I'm in the process of applying for MSA accreditation, but I'm concerned I don't meet all the criterior. I work freelance (mainly for MG Enthusiast) and the editor has agreed to provide a letter for me but the MSA guidelines themselves seem very strict. I've had three articles published this year, two motorsport, one technical and would have had a forth had the circuit controller and Pembrey not stopped me taking pictures due to a lack of said papers.

Does anyone on here have experience in this sort of thing? Any advice would be great, cheers!

I need MSA accreditation to take photos at the motorsport events I cover. I was at a rallycross at Pembrey in South Wales last month and the clerk of the course wouldn't allow me over the fences to snap the car as it raced, and infact, threatened to throw me off the course if he saw me taking pictures with my SLR! He said only MSA accredited freelancers are allowed to sign on for a press pass.

LOL I'm not suprised he threatened to throw you out if you were over the fence. If you'd have been injured or caused an injury there would have been hell to pay.
I've never heard of anyone been thrown out for using a DSLR , though. If people werent allowed to use a DSLR then there wouldnt be any specators anymore.

Anyway, I've never had accreditation for Pembrey, but normally if you want to get over the fence you dont need MSA accreditation. You just apply to each individual circuit or the series organiser. If you are writing/shooting for a printed magazine then i would say you stand quite a good chance of getting a pass.

What a MSA accreditation and whats it for sorry for a stupid question.

Motor Sports Association - governing body of motorsport in the UK. They issue a media pass.

However many circuits will give you accreditation without it, if you can satisfy other criteria. If helps if you are working for someone - eg magazine or newspaper and can provide a letter confirming this. If you are merely there because you want to be there then you'll probably be turned down.

I was turned down (in such a nice and polite way I have to say that it didn't really hurt or upset) last year when I applied last year and was told to get more stuff published - this was after quite a few published items in my first year in regional newspapers, a few race brochures as well as a few websites. Now in my second year I have yet to apply again, but I have been given a trackside access for Silverstone, Rockingham, Anglesey, Mallory and a few lesser venues too dull to mention.

I wasn't over the fence matey, just stood next to it! I would never try anything like that-it's not worth the risk.

if you were in the spectator area then the guy was just being an arse.
you can shoot from the spectator areas at any circuit. i wouldnt bother about accreditation at any other circuits as no one will bother you.

Well I am still going to apply for it so it's there should I need it but I will also make sure I am covered on a circuit by circuit basis too.

Do you know what it's like getting approval for Goodwood? I'm going to the Revival in September for a job you see. Thanks for all the advie mate.

An MSA media acceditation will not guarantee access. You'll still have to apply to each circuit and they can approve or reject you.

Haven't been to Goodwood for years. As its one of the big events, small-fry togs are at the bottom of the pile.

not sure about the revival, but i know that for the FOS its one of the very hardest things to get accreditation for. I applied about 3 years ago on behalf of a website and they had a strict rule that no websites allowed.
The revival might be easier, though, as its not such a big event.
