Hi again folks,

Over the last few days, everytime I start my PC - running W7 x64 - get a message that IntelliType Pro has stopped working. This message appears during the time that the computer is loading Windows. I have a MS Wireless Multimedia Keyboard v1 and MS Wireless Optical Mouse installed, which I have been using for several years without problem.

I've looked in the Task Manager and sure enough it's not there (although IntelliPoint is) and if I go the START menu and run it directly the dialogue box for changing the settings appears ... followed almost immediately by the message that the programme has stopped working. I used a restore point from a week ago (when everything was working fine) but still get the same error message.

IT does actually stop running as several of the assigned keys don't work - My Documents/My Pictures/My Music/Messenger - but others do.

I've uninstalled both the IT software and tried several different versions and also uninstalled the keyboard on the Device Manager but still get the same error message each time. I've also run sfc /scannow to check that W7's files are good.

Anyone got any ideas?

I assume you've tried replacing the batteries in your keyboard, if so, I'd suggest trying to resync the keyboard/mouse with the wireless receiver, details of how to do this are on the Microsoft site here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838398

Hi Nick and thanks for the response.

Indeed, I should have said that I've replaced the batteries and re-sync'd with the receiver - too many times to count :)

Hmm, right, well I had a similar problem to you, and after faffing around for ages trying to fix the problem, I eventually admitted defeat and went back to a wired keyboard and mouse.

If I was to have another go at trying to solve the problem, I'd suggest going to http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-gb/d/wireless-multimedia-keyboard and http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-gb/d/wireless-optical-mouse-2.0 download the latest Win7 64 bit keyboard and mouse drivers, if you don't already have them. Don't run it straight away, but go into the Win7 control panel, click Programs and Features, look down the list of installed programs, for Microsoft IntelliType and IntelliPoint programs and uninstall them both, your PC may request a reboot after removing these, once it's back up, run both of the executables that you previously downloaded.

I'm not willing to give up just yet :)

When I bought the keyboard and mouse they came with v5.0 drivers. At that time the PC was running XP, which I later upgraded(?) to Vista and then to W7. I've been running W7 for well over a year now with no issues but when this problem reared its ugly head I popped the v5 CD into the drive to re-install. Windows refused to install v5 saying it wasn't compatable with the OS, despite the fact it had been running fine all that time. I went to the MS website and downloaded the latest driver (v8.2) but that doesn't list my keyboard or mouse in the supported hardware list. I then downloaded v7.1 and 6.0. Both of these support my hardware and install okay (after deleting other versions in the control panel and re-booting the PC) but I get the error message even with those versions.

I'm not sure this is either a hardware or driver issue at all, but maybe a corrupted OS file that sfc /scannow didn't find? If it wasn't for the dread of having to re-install all my applications again I'd do a clean install of W7 but I haven't quite lost the will to live :)

If you have any more ideas I'd be pleased to hear them.

I don't suppose you could borrow a wired keyboard and mouse and plug one of them in at a time, to try and work out if one of the wireless devices was faulty. i.e. if you plug in the wired mouse and the Itellitype error goes away, or vice versa. Alternatively if you could try your wireless keyboard on a different PC/laptop, to establish whether as you say it's hardware or software.

That sounds like an idea! I'll get my grandson to bring his wired keyboard and mouse around tomorrow. In the meanwhile, I'll try my hardware on my laptop.

I'll be back with the results :)

D'oh! Can't try it on my laptop as it doesn't have a PS2 connector for the keyboard :(

GS has a (slightly) newer version of my hardware which he's going to bring around tomorrow ... we will try again then :)

Steve, I think I have a PS2/USB converter somewhere - if you get stuck, drop me a PM with your snail address and I'll pop it in the post for you to try.

Thanks for the offer Nod, but it'd be quicker to pop into Maplin and buy one - they're only about 1/2 mile away :)

You could buy a new Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Wireless-Desktop-2000-Brown/dp/B005ZRFHSS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398872312&sr=8-1&keywords=microsoft wireless keyboard for £24, which I suspect is just a little more than a PS2/USB dongle from Maplin :)

EDIT: It might seem strange that I suggested this product and that it may not necessarily solve the problem, but this keyboard and mouse combo also has a USB transceiver included in the box as well.

Assuming you haven't moved the receiver to a different USB port (wireless stuff usually doesn't like that), it sounds to me like the drivers have got messed up. Have a read of the posts by ups4 here - link.

Hi guys, I've been busy trying a few things as suggested above. If I connect a wired keyboard IT still stops running. I connected another slightly newer wireless keyboard, mouse and receiver and still get the problem. I think this rules out a hardware fault.

I've uninstalled IT & IP again and used regedit to remove all traces of them from the registry. The latest version of IT that supports PS2 connections is v7 so I installed that and ... still the same :(

If I launch IT manually I can see it has the right keyboard selected and I can reset the defined keys to their defaults but then it closes itself again. Reopening it reveals the key settings are all lost again.

I'm beginning to lose the will to live :)

I'd try this:

1. Disconnect wireless keyboard, mouse & receiver.

2. Plug in a wired keyboard & mouse to carry out 3 to 6 below.

3. Use Revo Uninstaller Pro (link) to get rid of the wireless mouse/keyboard drivers & software completely. Revo has an advanced mode that's more efficient than uninstalling via Windows Control Panel. (The 'Advanced' option selector becomes available after the initial scan).

4. Run CCleaner Free (blue registry button on left of interface, then 'scan for issues' at the bottom) just in case there are any broken entries in the registry. Link.

5. Reinstall wireless mouse/keyboard drivers & software (v7.1 or 6).

6. Shut down machine.

7. Disconnect wired keyboard & mouse.

8. Reconnect wireless keyboard, mouse & receiver.

9. Boot up machine.

You have a corrupt install of intellitype. Download the latest version and reinstall. Failing that, delete the keyboard and hid devices in device manager and reattach the keyboard dongle. It should reinstall via Windows update

Hi landwomble, I've uninstalled and installed several versions (6.x & 7.x) if IT - all of which I have downloaded from MS website. I can't use the latest (8.x) because it doesn't support PS2 connections from the receiver. These can't all be corrupt.

I've also already deleted the keyboard and hid in device manager ... makes no difference.

I'm going to try Ozei's scheme above later but if that fails then I'm going to ignore it. It's annoying but hardly life threatening :)

Okay, I give up! I know when I'm beaten :bat:

Nice try Ozie but I'm afraid the bluudy thing still isn't playing ball. I just don't get it ... IT stops working as soon as it's finished launching at power-up yet all but 3 of the configurable buttons on the keybaord are working (default settings). It just so happens that 2 of those I used to use a lot - hey ho! such is life :)

Cheers for the suggestions guys but chalk this up as another victory for M$

Think I'll go grab a beer

Mate, this is a failure for MS, we want our stuff to work and for customers to be delighted!. If you pm me then I'll send you a code for a free Microsoft Professional support call to get this sorted for you. I work for MS Premier and I don't like to hear of people getting stuck like this.

Wow! What can I say ... pm on its way :)

Steve - I'm surprised the method in post 15 didn't work if you used Revo Uninstaller's 'Advanced' option (step 3 above), like this:

NB. Above screengrab shows Revo Uninstaller getting rid of Belarc Advisor - note how it shows all the Belarc registry entries in tree layout. The tree for your MS software will probably be more complex because you've tried so many different versions now (5.xx, 6.xx, 7.xx, 8.xx) - choosing 'Select All' followed by 'Delete' will get rid of all associated registry entries.

I've never known Revo to fail.

Ozzie, yep that's exactly what I did. You're right, there was a lot to remove with all the versions.

PS. Perhaps run Revo again, then try installing IP_ITP5U.exe

Ozei, cheers, I'll give it a try tomorrow :)

Anything written to the event log to show what's happening?

Let me know when you've got an SR# with MS Professional Support and I'll track it for you.

Guys/Gals,

Gonna have to put this on hold until the weekend as I'm on a location shoot until mid-day Friday.

I'll get back to it on the weekend :)

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I only just realised I hadn't given an update to the problem ... and solution - my bad :(

Anyway, it turned out that there was nothing wrong with the OS or IntelliType but my boot drive was failing. Fortunately I managed to diagnose the problem before it became terminal and a new C:/ drive has been fitted - job done :)

Thanks for all the assistance, folks, it is much appreciated, as always :)
