Problem: I format the number as £'s ...... when save the spreadsheet and the format still stays as £'s ....... But when I close it and open it again the format sign has changed to $'s ... on all the numbers in the spreadsheet

anyone had this problem ........ it just crops up on a few Excel spread sheet that I use ...... problem started 3 years ago

Excel 2008, Mac version 12.0

weird?

Look at your defaults for windows office as well as excel. also look at format cells and check the cells are set to £ not $

where would I find those?

format cells are set to £'s when I save the spreadsheet - but when I open it again they show as set to $'s, (showing as "custom" with $'s in the drop down menu)

ah good, Excel for Mac. One of the worst bits of software out there.

try Tools -> language. Seems to default to English US.

but Excel for mac is so bug ridden you may never get to the bottom of it.

Thanks Neil

just had a go - reset it to English(UK) in language - reformatted back £'s - saved it ... Ok .... closed the file .. reopened it and it's back to $'s

tried it twice

I just have to keep reformatting back to £'s ........ when I "print" and want to send it out .... just annoying as there are a few sheets, (it's a budget model)

It does this on every Excel spreadsheet and it started about 3 years ago ..... as far as I can remember

Is the Mac set to UK English too? Go check the default language settings. My Mac didn't used to do that using M$ Office 2008 up until Mountan Lion, but I've since returned to windows and don't use it with excel any more.

yep Toni, Mac set to English (UK) as primary in Language and Region section

Can you uninstall & reinstall, then update office? Just a thought.

If it's all in sterling and in a columnar/table format, just use the currency symbol in column headings (data looks neater that way anyway). You can hardcode the symbol as a text cell so it won't change with the regional settings.
