MPs no longer accountable for expenses? (Government has now backed down!)

Took me quite awhile to find an article about this on the BBC site:

BBC article

MPs are due to vote this week on the new rules, which would allow them to keep their expense details secret.

And one from the Guardian:

Guardian article

An order due to come into force next week will stop in its tracks all the victories won by campaigners to bring full transparency to MPs' expenditure

How I heard about this, indeed the first I'd heard of it, was the alert on www.theyworkforyou.com asking visitors to tell MPs their opinions on the matter. I'm really surprised it hasn't gotten more mainstream media coverage.

Anyone have any views on this?

I think it's disgusting, I have to provide receipts if i want to claim any VAT back in my business yet they get to spend my tax money without providing a receipt for it or telling me what they've spent it on

Exactly, and I think many people will feel the same way. I've written to my MP asking him to vote against it - apparently many MPs are not even aware of the new order! :bang:

It's on the radio this morning.

Vote is to be a 3 line whip and law will be backdated to 2005.
Obviously trying to hide something.
Bunch of snout in the trough merchants. They can claim any amount up to £250 without a receipt.

Astounding arrogance of them.
