Hi Mark

What do you want the 70D to do better than your 600D ? What are finding a limitation / frustration ?

But, at the end of the day, if you can afford it and the differences the 70D gives you over your 600D are what you are after, then go for it...:)

I see this as good way forward you get a better frame rate better focus system better iso noise. in the end the best upgrade may be a good lens as the 600d is a capable camera. my best upgrade for my 550d/t2i was an L lens

I started with a 550D and have had a few other bodies, including two 7D's and a 60D, before ending up with a 70D. The 70D is a big upgrade over the 550D (which is very similar to the 600D) giving much better ISO handling, better FPS and a far better AF system among other things. As for going for glass before body which seems to be the usual way, I still use some of the same lenses, including a 100 f2.8L IS macro, and the 70D does give a better IQ than the 550D did with the same lenses. If you're wanting a new body then the 70D is probably the way to go. IMO it's the best crop body I've owned, including a 1D MkIII which is a 1.3 crop, and you can get some real bargains out there for the 70D if you go for an import.

I got mine from LCE in Lincoln as I went for a part exchange but if I was buying it now Id go for either Hdew Cameras (in the UK) or Panamoz (in Hong Kong) for the best prices at the moment.

I will be part exchanging it. I have the standard 55-250mm, 70-300mm IS USM. Sigma 18-200mm and kit original 18-55mm. I like the 600d but just fancied something better. Low light is a problem but I know that's the lens fault rather than the camera.

Ive just upgraded my 550D to a 70D for land use (Keeping the 550D for underwater until i can find £2500 spare for a new housing...). I've noticed a big difference. Firstly, the viewfinder, bigger, brighter - much easier to frame the shots and read. The electronic level is great as well.
The AF system - with the same lenses the 70D focuses much faster and much more accurately. The AI Servo tracking modes are a lot more comfortable and a lot more accurate.
Faster burst is good for action stuff and im getting a bit less noise at a given ISO.

Ergonomically having a dial and a wheel makes adjusting things so much nicer (although there is no fast white balace set button now which im missing).

Certainly for me a worthwhile upgrade, although there was noting wrong with the 550D the 70D is allowing me to get a better success rate and more chance of getting the images i want due mainly to the viewfinder and better AF performance.

Hopefully magic lantern will appear on it at some point.

I handled the 70D the other day and wasnt impressed by how dinky it was - I've just bought a 50D s/h and will hold my breath for the 7D2 in due course

Compared to the 20/30/40/50 yes - the 70 is quite small in the hand and feels plasticky and insubstantial, though I doubt the OP will notice that coming for an xxxd

Go for the 70D, you will not be disappointed (y)

Think your right. Just need to sell mine to MPB then buy the 135mm kit from Panamoz. They seem geninune enough and price seems right for a grey import.

Just do it. As for dinkiness of 70D I don't have small hands and it fits nicely with all fingers on the grip. PS I don't have one, just tried it in Jessops.

Well finally ordered my 70d with 18-135mm STM lens. Part exchanged all my existing gear so can't wait for it to arrive.

Excellent, you will not be disappointed (y)

Congrats on ordering your new camera, don't forget to have a look through the 70D owners thread to get a lot of helpful hints and tips. Also don't forget to update your Canon software on your computer as the 550D version wont work with it. You could always get a head start by downloading the 70D manual from the Canon website. Most of all, enjoy it.

Enjoy your new purchase - there's nothing like a new toy to play with. :)

You'll love it Mark. Great combo.

Got to disagree personally about the 50D comments in earlier post

To me, the 70D is a FAR superior camera in nearly all respects.

I've had the 450d first then the 600d and now 70d. Hoping this upgrade will be something major. I've read loads of reviews on line and it sounds impressive. It's a shame I've sold all my lenses so the 18-135mm will be my only one for the moment. So will look to here for guidance in a few months on my next purchases.

I've had the 550D 7D and now the 70D.

The 70D has a noticeably better image quality to me than the 550D and 7D, which were very similar.

My copy of the 18-135 STM is virtually silent and a real eye opener when you use it for the first time!

You hear nothing when you focus!

Image quality is excellent (barring the typical barrel distortion at 18mm)

It's a great general lens for the 70D

I had a look at the 18-135 STM the other day and I'm really tempted to take the plunge on it, even though it wont go with my 5D3. I have only EF lenses at the moment and use them for my 70D as well but I'm planning on doing some video work soon and the only STM lens I've got at the moment is the 40mm pancake and I want some flexibility for the video so the zoom would be good. It's either the 18-135 on its own or an 18-55 and 55-250 pairing of STM lenses and the 18-135 is obviously going to be cheaper so is favourite.

took delivery of a 700d with the 18-135 stm lens this week and have to say I am surprised at how good it seems to be, it is silent, and the few shots I have taken are sharp it appears much better than the original 18-135 kit lens. So you should be fine with it for a while.

I agree with everything said re 18-135 stm. It's superb! Quick, silent focus, surprisingly sharp too.

Slight update, moved away from Panamoz and Hdew so had to downsize on the lens to the 18-55mm. Brought from Wex Photographic but it comes with UK model and Sandisk Extreme SD and case. I will look to purchase possibly 55-250mm to fill the range gap I have now created.

I'm also going to be looking for a replacement strap one that goes over the shoulder and screws into the tripod mount, any recommendations?

Was worried about warranty and charger plugs. Plus wanted it sooner than was expected.

Thanks for recommendation of the quick strap thingy. Just ordered one looks perfect can't wait for the camera to arrive tomorrow so I can properly test it togther.

Well my 70d arrived today and wow what a camera, I pushed for the 135mm stm lens in the end. I am so glad I did it's amazing quality and the feel from the camera is well worth the extra over my original 600d. Just need to charge the battery. Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Mark, did you part ex with Wex or MPB? Have been wondering about the same upgrade path.

Thinking of moving from a 600d ro 70d myself. Primary aim would be better iso handling and general image quality. I'm currently using the Canon 17-55 f2.8, and would be on the 70d. Am I likely to see much of an improvement in image quality/iso?

I have found the change definitely worth the upgrade, the improvement in overall quality will show with that F2.8 lens. Ive only got the kit 18-135mm, but will be looking at something along the F1.4 lines later in the year.

I started off with a 550D, which is basically the same as the 600D with a couple of features missing. The difference in IQ between the shots I took with the 550D and the shots I take now with the 70D are noticeable, specially as you go higher up the ISO scale. The 70D just gives better IQ with the same lenses, the AF system and speed are also big differences and the overall feel of the 70D, while some people say it feels 'plastic' (polycarbonate and glass fibre actually), is much better overall than any of the xxxD models and on a par with some of the newer xxD models. In between my 550D and my 70D I've had a 60D, two 7D's, a 1D MkIII, a 5DMkII and I've used the wifes 650D and out of all of those I prefer the 70D. While it's not up to the standards of my 5D MkIII it does make a fantastic companion to it and IMHO it's the best pairing I've had by a long way.
