Hi there,

For my portfolio that im doing for college which will be used for HNC interviews i originally had a A3 portfolio with pockets inside them. But im not liking it and dont think its nice to present your images in a pollypocket which can get alot of flare. So now im going to buy black mounting boards to which i will put my a3 print (which has white border) on to. Then place them inside a a2 portfolio. So to be clear, an A3 photo mounted onto A2 black mounting board.

So my questions are: where is best place to get cheap mounting boards? and anyone have any other advise on how to present my images?

Cheers and thanks for any info.

Also, ive already resized all my pics to A3 and have uploaded them to my printing place. But ive i decide to change and do A4 prints , will i need to upload again or is downscaling fine? the dpi will go up but will i notice nothing strange on prints?

cheers

Some academics hate A2 portfolios as to look at them they need a space A1 in size to view it, they would sooner see your creativity.

Got my first college interview coming up in few weeks and got letter in post saying "maximum size a3" . When they say that would you think the overall size can only be a3? or could i mount a3 prints on a2 mounting card? ive tried just a3 prings in a a3 portfolio but looks awful with no mounting.

I think ill buy A3 mounting boards and mount an A4 print with white border on it.

Cheers

I would say that means the max size portfolio / individual piece must not exceed A3.

Or if you have a photobook, no bigger than A3 dimensions.

Yeh im thinking that myself. I want to do a normal porfolio as i want to show my decisions on choosing different paper for different subjects etc So i think the a4 mounted onto a3 will be what ill go for.

Had one of those photobooks before, they are very nice to show off your work. Think it was photobox i got it from right enough so doubt there quality would be up to par at a3 size.

Anyways cheers for suggestions

I dont mean those cheap photobooks.

I would print onto chosen paper then have the book bound by a book binder. I did this for my final project in my degree, printed to hahnemuhle Phot Rag 308gsm then had it bound, only cost around £50 and looked superb.

or prints mounted to card and presented in a box with tissue paper separating each print looks very good and are easy to handle, plus you dont have to put them in the crap plastic sleeves.

think about the presentation and the process of handling and looking at the print, it should be an enjoyable experience. the presentation should also if possible complement the subject matter / series of images.

Also look at the way the images flow n a sequence, good portfolios / books take the viewer on a journey, from start to middle to finish.

hope this may help a bit.

I also notice you say you have them ready for printing at A3, why are they all cropped to A3 is this the best ratio / crop for each image or have you compromised because you think all images should be the same size in a portfolio. the images can be different crops as needed, you are providing uniformity by mounting them all on the same size card.

Most are cropped a3, but i have some panoramic 15x5. So have a little variety. All of my a3s must be perfectly composed if they dont require cropping hehe
