Hello

Lucky chap here, I got a Smartflash4 for Xmas,
I also have a Neewer collapsible Softbox which has a mount for a flashgun, the one where the Flashgun is held by screwing down a clamp and the softbox fits over the outside ring which is 15cm across which I believe is called an S-Type Mount. The softbox does not have any rods.
What adapter do I need to fit the current softbox to the smart flash, and do all softboxes use the same mounting. I can not afford a bigger softbox till later on this year.

It all reminds me of plumbing, where nothing fits anything else and size adapters are like hens teeth or cost a fortune for what they are.

Hi Pete,

I do not think your softbox will work with your smart flash, if it is something like this one:

If you want something cheaper you may have to go for something like:

I have one of the Phot R ones but cannot find the link, they are well made for the price.

The good news is that there’s tons of softboxes, snoots, beauty dishes etc that’ll fit your Smartflash 4 and will also fit into the adaptor you got with your softbox (s type being the most common fit).
The bad news is that your softbox isn’t S type, it just clips onto the outside of the s type adaptor and it’s a PITA to fit it to the Smartflash.

As Above.
Basically, your softbox has been designed to fit the cheapest (worst) flash heads, the ones that have fixed reflectors and that have to be bodged to work with softboxes. Personally, I've never seen any of these "universal fitting" softboxes that work well, possibly because the people who buy the flash heads that they actually fit aren't usually appreciative of quality and are unlikely to pay more for something better.

You have a good flash head, my recommendation is that you do it justice and buy an equally good softbox. The accessory fitting for your SmartFlash is S fit, also known as Bowens fit.

Thank you for your replies so far

I have found this on Amazon
and was wondering it it would work with the outside ring removed, as it appears that is possible.

I cound then reattach the outside ring again for other softboxes?

You could feasibly push it through the hole, but it wouldn’t be secure, I suspect it’d just flop about.

I know you don’t have a budget atm, I recommend you have a bit of patience till you can buy a proper s fit softbox. Whilst many photographers think £700 for a lens is cheap, it’s weird how many balk at the idea of a £80 softbox. Particularly asdecent lighting has more effect on an image than lots of lens features.
