Subject to Covid restrictions, i’m off to Skye for a week over Christmas. Was hoping to maybe get to Raasay and do some landscape and mountain hare photography whilst i’m there.

Does anyone have any advice on where might be a good kick off point for leaving car and looking for hares?

Any other advice about photographing Raasay would be appreciated, either wildlife or landscape

Hi Jim, well as far as we know, we don't have any mountain hares on Raasay at all, just loads of rabbits!!...not sure where you heard that from??..and we've been here for over 30 years

As far as I know, the only place to see them in in the Cairngorms, it's certainly the best in Scotland.

Best thing is to move to PM if you want any info and I can give you my mobile no. and we can have a chat.....and thanks Jim (admirable) for the heads up!!

George.

Well I've done a bit of research amongst the crofters and others who are out on the land, and the results are that you want to see mountain hares don't come to Raasay!!!...only found one person who had seen one and that was many years ago.

We do however have eagles, both golden and white tail, and quite a few otters, and in the spring and early summer Arctic terns nest here prior to them setting off on their epic migration to Antarctica.

Am in touch with Jim re his proposed trip.

As I said, the Cairngorms are the best place to see mountain hares if you can catch them before they are shot, but that's another story......and also of course ptarmigan are fairly plentiful.

George.

There's a small population of mountain hares in the Peak District.
There is indeed and in a few months I hope to be out photographing them again.
Part of the problem for the Peaks population is, in my non-scientific opinion, they exist in 3 or 4 distinct clusters, with no easy (safe) access to each other.
