Hi, am looking for my first zoom lens but really don't have a big budget just now :'( Only really got about £200 now just now so will really need to buy second hand...

I know I can get a Tamron/Sigma 70-300mm in my budget, but from what I have read the auto focus isn't fast enough for motorsport but will be fine for wildlife?

Or would I be better getting something like a Nikon 55-200/55-300?

Cheers for any advice :)

A couple of 55-200's in classifieds at significantly less than your budget and the current owners maintain they produce exceptionally sharp images...might be worth a punt.

To be honest, even second hand, £200 just ain't enough for a reasonable long'ish zoom for wildlife and motorsport, I would double your budget, save another £200 and with £400 you could get a reasonable lens for motorsports and wildlife like a sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 ok it would be used, but a 200mm lens for motorsport or wildlife just ain't going to cut the mustard unless you can get really close to the action, at most race circuits, there's very little opportunity to get that close (other than rallying or motoX).

same q from me. I have a 300 but not sure it has the reach - what is a 'reasonable' price for a 100-400 and what brand?

You'd need to up the budget quite a bit - 50-500 sigma :) around 600-800...
But I think they might have one at lenses for hire... So you can try and see whether its worth it...

You may want to get a decent 300mm and a 1.4x converter?

I went for a tair 300mm f4.5, have a 2x converter if required and the m42 adapter (fairly cheap)... Cost me I think 100 ukp for the lot :)

At least you can see whether you'd use it that much and whether its worth investing in a nice set of glass....

Still jealous of Micloi's 600mm canon... Fills a hiking rucksack though.

Could try some manual lenses, loads of choice for your budget, we didn't always have auto focus http://forum.mflenses.com/fast-action-and-mf-lenses-t34213,highlight,+action,start,15.html

Yes you can use manual lenses, it was what photographers were using before we were blessed with autofocus. So using manual focusing, you pre focus on a point that the subject will move through – and shooting at that point. You need to get your timing just right but you can get some really great shots – as long as the subject always moves through that pre focus area., but if the track of the subject differs, thats when manual focus can become a real challenge, but perhaps a very good ability to master

Lol and at least it doesn't cost as much to muck some up using cards instead of film

Remember the days when you though 5 rolls of film was a really good day shooting :D what is it now, 500, 800, 1000, 1500 shots :cuckoo:

Funny thing is I'm obviously taking more photos although not overly but notice my wife who has only been interested since digital probably outshoots me 20 to 1 :D would make for a good separate discussion
