I am a newcomer to motorsport photography and photography in general for that matter. Had a Canon 250d for a little while now and am looking to pick up a lens for motorsport in particular for the coming 2022 season. Can I get some suggestions on a good starter lens below shall we say £1000 as I'm not really sure what's good. Thanks in advance :)

All used
Canon 100-400 L Mk1
Canon 300mm f4 L
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L Mk1 and a Mk2 if you can stretch that far
Have a look on MPB or Wex ( MPB have a good selection , I have not looked on Wex)

Just another thought, before you splash out hire say a 100-400 and a 70-200 and see which you get on with

Its worth it to ensure you buy what suits , its an expensive mistake if you don't like what you buy.

It will depend on the track, how far away you are and if you're shooting through fencing (most places these days). I actually use both a 70-200mm (well 70-180mm at the moment) and a 100-400mm and use them both equally.

As snerkler says, it depends very much on the track and where you can get to. I tend to have 2 bodies, one with an 18-135 and one with a 100-400 on APS-C bodies. On occasion, the 18mm end of the shorter lens has been too long - the joys of Wiscombe Park hillclimbing!

I spend all my time at Snetterton (as I have a season pass there) so generally they are longer shots, but using my family members lens of 70-200mm seems to do the job nicely, if anything more zoom would be better :D

What’s Snetterton like, has it suffered the same fate as most other circuits with catch fencing everywhere?

Try that with a 1.4TC ( hire one ) that will give you 280mm , you will loose one stop of light but it should retain AF and at least you will see if 300mm ( ish) is enough or if you need 400.

Does anyone know if this lens is any good? From the few reviews I have seen it looks solid, but once again I'm not entirely sure

The missus has one that she uses on her 80D. Focusing is ridiculously fast, faster than my EF 100-400mm ii. Image quality is pretty decent too. Due the the rear element position, it doesn’t take the Canon 1.4x teleconverter, it’s made of plastic so is very light, the IS system is effective though the seals are not weather resistant.

We got her lens at a silly price with Canon cash back and a discount at the same time. For what we got it for, stone bargain.

Even for the price of ~£600 looks like a pretty good pick with good length of zoom for me, a quick focus should come in handy for motor racing

I'm assuming this lens would be much better than the one I poster? Additionally this site is totally legit?

MPB are legit, they‘ve been trading in used gear for years.

The EF 70-300mm L is well thought of. I’ve seen a few images from one and thought it performed well, but not used one myself.

When we got the 70-300ii like the one you posted, I was genuinely amazed, even shocked at how good it was and wouldn’t swap it for the L version.

All that said, I mostly carry a EF 100-400mm L II and EF-S 15-85mm on a 7DII. That covers pretty much everything I need including motorsport.

SIGMA 70-200 mm f/2.8 Sport Lens with 1.4 TC is worth a look, 2nd user may push your budget. I use for BIF and motorsport, gives me the speed and versatility I need without having to carry kit around.
PS I also find a good monopod very helpful.

I really do like the look of the 70-300ii for the price and more reviews I have seen, thank you very much for the help yourself and everyone :) hope it will do me well
