Yes
Probably a mid life crisis, but keep seeing ads for these. The base one only does 45mph and with dual battery a range of up to 80 miles, but I love the styling and just fancy one. Not a biker, always thought a proper one would kill me!! Long shot but does anyone have one and what are they like?

They are quite cool.

One good thing for me is they are automatic. Arthrits would stop me riding a normal bike these days.

IMHO, it would look quite nice if the power plant etc looked like a normal engine, but they probably are designed so that they dont look like that

Don't forget that you'll need your CBT before riding one of them. Not difficult but takes up a day.

I quite like the look of the Maevings but would want more range and performance.

I was just sold by the looks.

Seems a nice thing to enjoy a few leisurely rides in nice weather, or even pop to the shops for a couple of bits or head to friends house. Real bikes scare me, the power is crazy and i would be so scared of coming off.

Interesting discussion.....

I found this review https://scooterlab.uk/70mph-maeving-rm1s-retro-electric-commuter-road-test/

FWIW back in the 70's I started with Honda CG125 and that at times ran out of 'ooomph' just when you kind of needed!

I switched to Suzuki 425GS and that was a fine all rounder.......a long trip to Brum was ok.

I can see the appeal of a Maeving but should you @cambsno decide you want one, I suggest finding a training scheme near you and get familiar with the handling and power of traditional 125cc bike before you splash the cash.

I wouldn’t assume an electric motorbike is any safer than a petrol one: you can still get killed on a non “proper bike”. 9 times out of 10 it’s other motorists not paying attention that causes bike accidents, not the bike or the rider themself. Personally I’d prefer a 500 or 600cc petrol bike…. comfortable, easy to ride but with enough poke to keep up with traffic and accelerate out of trouble if needs be. I’d also be concerned about constantly needing to find places to charge an electric bike that had such a short range.

I am aware of that - but I have no plans to go much above 60 and will not be taking corners on my knee.

Even if the 80 mile range is less - say 65, that will be plenty enough for me!

You'll still need to take the same tests as an ICE rider, although, if you'll be sticking with the 125 equivalent, that's only the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) which needs renewing every 2 years. Plenty of training centres all over the country. IIRC, the Maeving has a removable battery so is easy to charge anywhere there's a 13A socket. Not sure how many miles per hour the charging rate is though!

I came off my bike when I was 17…. an elderly lady driver pulled out of a side road in front of me without looking. I was probably only doing 25mph when I hit the side of the car and went straight over the bars. I landed on my face and knocked out my front teeth. Not trying to say it’ll happen to you but don’t assume that “under 60mph” is safe. ;)
