I was shooting down at Leeds Carnegie yesterday. First game at 5:30pm and the second at 6:30pm. I was shooting towards the main stand (Clock end) with the sun behind me. The shadow areas at this time were very minimal and exposure was not a problem. However come the second game, the sun had dropped and was casting long shadows all over the field, mainly due to the large screens, advertising boards and trees. The exposures were all over the place and I found it very testing to get the correct exposures. The backgrounds would have been nice if there had been a full crowd, but as it was junior rugby finals, the crowds were really small by comparison.

I have not had to contend with these situations before, I guess it is something I need to master if I am to proceed to the higher levels that I am aiming for.

How do you guys deal with this situation.?

I was shooting the presentions up in the stand after the first game when all of a sudden the sprinkler system kicked in at the end where my other kit was. I looked across in horror as my gear got a soaking. I think the sprinkler system must have been on a timer or something as there was no warning at all.Very luckily, someone quickly isolated the sprinklers. Luckily my gear was ok as I had all weather sealed kit. A quick wipe down and I was good to go. Fortunately I had closed my bag so spare batteries, lenses etc were all dry.

Morale of the story, Plan for the unexpected..Better still, don't leave your gear loafing !

Avoiding soakings like that is something you get used to when you shoot hockey on water based pitches..
I'll be shooting 4 games back to back this saturday, and the pitch will be watered before each game. I have to gather all my gear and retreat into the stand between games. In fact, depending on the wind direction, I might have to take everything back into the press room.

I was shooting some rugby last month and right after the game I noticed some hockey was being played adjacent to the rugby pitch,so I wandered across to take a look. The game came to a break and all the players walked off the pitch...soon after an alarm sounded and red flashing lights illuminated...One of the spectators said to stand back....I soon found out why, the sprinkler system kicked in and the pitch was heavily watered. I'd never seen this before and found it very interesting. The spectators were saying that their spouses who were playing, often finished the game with water sodden trainers and socks.
Not really my game but each to their own

Perhaps something for me to shoot in the future.

Football league grounds often do this before and sometimes after the game. I always try to hide my laptop behind the advertising boards but my pelicase is water tight anyway

Flashing lights and alarms Tug? We don't get any warnings like that at the grounds up here. You southerners do get things easy..... ;)

You get astro pitches which are sand based, and newer ones which are water based. These have a better surface to play on, and are less likely to cause injury as players are more likely to slide over than stick to the surface. You also get good photos with the splashes of water glinting in the sunlight on a freshly watered pitch.

In my day of course , we played on grass or red blaze surfaces. Maybe I could have been good if I'd had a smooth surface to play on, though probably :shake:
