Morning all,

Another interesting day with lighting at Loftus Road yesterday. Not only the usual 'stands in sun, players in shade' but also quite an interesting white balance mix (within a very short distance). Also as the second half went on there were a few spots of glorious warm sunlight to play with ....

Just wondering which grounds you find most challenging from a lighting point of view ....

cheers,

Nige

I am guessing you mean natural light daytime..otherwise your just going to get a long list of grounds with poor floodlights in answer to your question..

so presuming you mean daytime :)

A lot depends on time of yr and time of day.. I went to todcaster in yorkshire for leeds v blackburn womens game a few yrs ago (so maybe changed now). all down one side of the ground where tall thin trees (no idea what make) and the sun came up behind them leaving the pitch like a zebra crossing for shadows and light and I mean really harsh differences between the two.. you couldn't get a player in one part of the light.. always in two..

Bemerton HH in the Wessex League, pitch is surrounded by a white wall with advertisement boards. Camera's metering is fooled if using AV on a sunny day, could use compensation but then the wall is not always in the background. Some of the ground is in shadow, so got to contend with that as well.
I go full manual and adjust as the lighting changes and try adjust on the fly when the action is in the shadows.

Use BBF and the camera re meters and exposes for every single shot in a sequence, dont use BBF and the camera only meters and exposes for the first shot and uses that exact same metering for every other shot in the sequence so if youre subject runs in and out of shadow areas you will get all sorts of under/over/correct exposures

thats exactly why your camera has semi auto modes and exactly why manual is not good for all sutuations..

I do use BBF Gary. With that particular ground if I use AV mode when its sunny, I get some under exposure (when there is one player in shot) due to large areas of bright white.
But then when there are a few players in the shot not as much white is showing, hence why I find it better to use manual for that particular ground in sunny conditions.

Gary/Kipax what mode would you use under those particular conditions and why?
