So last night I was covering the Mosconi Cup, the premier event in the world of pool! They say its the Ryder Cup of cue sports, and I have to say it was a lot more interesting than I was expecting.

Having not covered something like this before I chatted for a while with a seasoned tog - a lovely gent called JP Parmentier, if you're interested. He's got this gig sewn up and covers the game as it tours the world in various competitions. Great approach, I thought.

This was the last night of four consecutive events, culminating in a trophy award at the end (Team Europe won). It was around five hours of competition, and the fans were completely wasted after two so the noise in there was crazy!

Photographically it was a tricky job. Very little room near the table, manoeuvring around the Sky Sports cameras whilst trying not to block the view for the crowd. Three sides of the table area were wrapped in nasty chrome thus spoiling the backgrounds. I went up high into the stands but you lose the drama at the table and only good for stock, abstracts and a couple of wides. I spent a lot of time low to the table, at 200mm, trying to capture players' eyes. Since its quiet when they're at the table, silent mode on the shutter is essential and so no motordrive.

And with so much playing time you end up fiddling around and trying creative stuff with slow shutters etc. This is tricky hand held with a tele.

I'll be honest it was a nice treat working inside for a change, but it was unexpectedly tiring. My knees are knackered too.

Darts tonight also. Any more pub sports going?!

If you have experience shooting cue sports, please share.

I've shot our pub pool team a few times. Not really professional standard but challenging due to crap lighting and lack of space. I'd like to be able to share tips and best practice but it was a just shoot and play with settings until I was happy.

I've been asked to go and get more of the team and also of the pub's petanque team and match.

Nice work David, i prefer the high up and arena shots, where was this, it looks very much an old fleapit (cinema) i once went to in Chelmsford
