More of a press question but this seems the best place.

When I go to a photocall for the agency I do jobs for or even when I'm doing the likes of corporate portraiture and the person being shot isn't the one commissioning the work I often get asked "Can you email me those pics too?"

I'm sure this must happen in sport too so what do you guys do?

It happened a few times today at the Scottish Bike Show, 1st photocall involved a member of the British Commonweath Games cycling squad riding a spin bike and setting a record that people were to try and beat. It was on the Scottish Power Renewables stand and obv involved the Commonwealth Games people too and the PR girl that was liaising between the two groups asked if I'd send her images. She knew who I was and that I was there for a press agency so knows I'm not just an amateur photographer (as if all the kit I cart about with me didn't make it obvious enough!).

2nd photocall was Miss Glasgow promoting a Glasgow - Paris charity cycle here both Miss Glasgow and the ride organiser asked for images.

There are several factors to take into account, so there isn't an easy answer.

The two major ones are:

Does your agency have an exclusivity clause, either complete or with a time bar (say 1 week or so)?
and
Is there an embargo on the images?

In either of the above cases then the answer is no until the restrictions are lifted.

If you're on direct commission then manners would make me delay any hand outs until post publication.

The more ticklish issue is do you give them freebies or charge.

For a PR company I'd want to charge, especially if they intend to use them for promo purposes. For an individual subject, they'd probably get copies as a thank you and as for the charity, that's down to your own conscience and whether or not you support their aims.

Those factors have to be weighed up against how many brownie points free copy can get you towards future leads and advance info/invitations to attend!

As far as I know there's no exclusivity clause. Should maybe check.
Today I sent out low res images with my web address tastefully placed along the bottom edge.
I didn't say in the OP incase the first reply was someone ripping into me for not charging.
The PR girl said it was for facebook so my guess is if they aren't getting them free then they aren't going to be interested and better to have something out there with my address on for them to look at and remember me than not.
Having quite an interest in cycling probably meant I was more forthcoming with images today than I may be/have been in other circumstances.
I suppose simply directing them to the agency website (where images are usually displayed as soon as I file them) would be a good way to do it if I don't want to give images for free.
