China: "hold my beer"
It was wrong to dig through a national monument without consent but times change and unless I've missed the news, the Mongols aren't planning to invade China anytime soon.

That being the case, a few gaps to make travel easier for the locals can't be so bad.

Not to worry the Vogons will be here soon to remove planet Earth for their galactic super highway.......afteral it will be a nice shortcut for the locals!

Normally I'd say that archtectural relics help a nation retain a sense of identity and past culture, but it *feels like* the Chinese government have worked so hard to eradicate a history and culture they can't control that those aspects don't really matter right now. Possibly one day there will be another China that can rediscover the value of their past. From a historical POV most nations have plundered their own monuments for building materials at various times, though EVERYONE should be a little more enlightebed now.
