So here we go, I have really not been using my camera much for a while - so I will try to keep up with this, no guarantees on quality yet, but I keep trying.
I will try not to look at too many others before I do my photo each week, but inevitably when I am a bit stuck I will have a peek for inspiration. Processing will always be pretty minimal I must warn you!!

cheers

Paul

Week 1 accommodation

Hmm it is a bit isn't it, didn't want it too good, but didn't think printer would be running out of ink for a tiny sign either :-)

I didn't see a snail one but I was thinking along same lines then saw someone had done a hermit crab shell so thought I would try for different. I may have seen the "To Let " sign somewhere, but not going to beat myself up over non originality.

No not saying that at all Paul, its a completely different shot, just meant the for sale bit thats all, as thats the first thing I thought of when I saw his shot, ah a bird house for sale shot

Brilliant idea Paul
I like this a lot . . . quite a quirky take on the theme and set up & executed nicely.

Do you have any processing software at all?
A couple of really simple tweaks would really help this IMO. Personally, I'd crop this just below the top of the fencepost - that would help remove the slight distraction of the fence in the b/g and also place the sign on a horizontal third which would draw your eye to it more. I'd also balance that by taking a little off the left to lose the horizontal lines of the trellis.
And just a subtle increase to the contrast would make the writing stand out better and bring out some more of the grain in the wood of the house.

Thanks for the tips Sarah, I'll have a go I am sooo novice with photoshop and it takes ages to do anything on my laptop that's why I usually end up with little or no processing.I usually try to do an exposure tweak at least and I think I did crop a bit but obviously not enough.
Also the sign didn't really come out as clear as I wanted -printer ink running out. Will try harder for "NEW" theme.

Here is week two, managed to get pic this morning.
Dozy me shooting in jpg, yes its on macro, yes it's handheld, probably v soft - no I haven't ventrued outside back garden yet for this challenge :)

The buds are new - I think ladybird may be passed its sell by date.

This was also shot today was a possibility for NEW, but I think it fits style too so here you go

It is isn't it. I've only got today to try for something better and then I have to do this weeks. Bit of a cop out but i might just leave it.

Love the first picture for the accommodation theme. Really great interpretation of the theme. The New puncture is a fantastic idea and I love the vibrant colours of the ladybird offset against the white background... But something just doesn't look right with it.... As you said, perhaps a little soft. Still love the idea though.

I'm afraid I agree that the third image is a little bland. Although you have tried to get DoF I feel the whole picture just merges in to one and all that is seen is some checked material.... It is a tricky theme though!!

nice interpretation of week 1, it made me smile :)

week 2 - brilliant! lovely dof & detail in this shot, and I like the way the twig is running diagonally through your pic :)

week 3 - no so sure about this one, as it doesn't really tell me anything about what the article is or what the context is. Sorry if it sounds a bit negative.

:bat: Paul, will you just stop being so apologetic for your photos?!!!
Week 2 is absolutely lovely.
Great colours, great DoF and you've absolutely nailed the focus on that Ladybird. They're not easy to photograph by anyone's standards and you've managed to combine a technically strong shot with a pleasing composition. Brilliant
If it needs any sharpening, it looks to be due to the re-sizing process rather than anything else. All photos benefit from a little sharpen for displaying at web sizes, but TBH it looks good to me just the way it is.

Number 3 is a good fit for the theme and as a technical exercise it's another strong macro. You've got some really good detail in the stitching.
However, as far as subject matter goes, I think you needed to try something a bit more interesting with it to engage the viewer. Maybe shooting it on a flat surface with a button as sharp foreground interest and the checks leading back into an oof background???

Thanks for the comments guys,I will take all that on board when i get ahead at least, for now I am already behind so here is week 4 Open shot last night (while making dinner).

open1b_800.jpg

It is open but it's also .....ajar, I make no apology for this appalling pun.
I used a spotlight to light it and got the jar as clean as I could. I am hoping I have positioned it nicely, and the table wood grain and shadows and highlights add something to what is essentialy again quite dull. cheers Guys.

Oh and thanks for the advice Sarah, the shirt merits having another attempt at doing something better. I will try to do what you say and not be negative. I am finding I am having to rush the job when i take these photos and it is about all I am doing with the camera at the moment. on a positive note, I am forcing myself to use the tripod and set up a shot and use manual a lot - and even Manual focus, which I think I really needed for the jar shot. Onwards and upwards!

Paul,

love week 1... thats a great opening shot..full of humour... i had to take a second look..then get closer..its my age i'm sure...

week 2 great macro.. ladybird full of rich colour...

week 3 ..yeah..go for it again... i keep looking at the fuzzy pacth in the centre...

week 4, i haven't tried glass, but i get drawn to the shadow and the pattern in the glass itself ... maybe if the lighting was from a different angle...

all the same.. a big

or so the Mrs says anyway......
The plan is, as I have no kids football matches to attend, to go OUT - yes OUT of the confines of the house and garden and try to catch up, 4 weeks in one day.

it's a bit of a tall order and I am also of thinking of trying to combine themes maybe as a triptych or similar.

Wish me luck.

Paul

Oh Crap just stuck my head outside and it's raining.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I know the feeling. It's not easy to catch up at the best of times, and then everything conspires against you!

I do like your week 4, and in a lot of ways it's actually quite like mine in theme. Open liquid container backlit on a wooden table, yet still very different images.

I have to admit you week 1 got a laugh out of me too, very creative.
