Just a quickie here ......

I have a Nikon D50 and often use it with a Tamron 70-300mm and also a Kenko x2 teleconverter.

Mainly I use it on a tripod so no hassles.

However, with the football season starting soon (get in!), I am hoping to catch some action shots using the above setup with a monopod. Obviously with the lens fully extended and the TC on the camera, I am unsure as to how stable this would be.

I have no lens collar to attach to the monopod, so it simply a case of attaching the camera body and letting the lens/TC 'hang off'.

Can anyone tell me if this would be an okay combination, or better still, if you can buy separate lens collars.

The whole idea of long lenses and monopods is a new concept to me, so any advice is gratefully accepted.

Cheers.

It might tend to fall forward with no lens collar and the pod attached on the camera. It will still make it more steady rhan hand holding, but try and find a collar. I am sure you can buy one that fits your lens.

Collar definitely helps. I've managed to lash something up with cable ties and a Manfrotto plate before.

I've also used a Canon 500 on a monopod - works well...

The lens you intend to use isn't too long or heavy so you'll probably be OK screwing straight into the body as long as your're careful and support the lens well with your left hand. A lens collar would be better though as everyone has said. I use the monopod a lot these days. When I first bought it I didn't bother with a tilt head but I added one later as it makes it much easier to adjust for high and low subjects. Monopod heads are pretty cheap too. :)

I hate mono's, get youself up the gym lol i use the 300mm, and 400mm with 2xtc hand held without any issue

With my limited experiance if you do go mono-pod then mounting to the lens is the best option if possible. Maybe time to get the sticky back plastic out aka Blue Peter stylee if there aint nowt on the market.

LOL @ Russdaz.

It was more camera shake in low lighting conditions I was worried about, rather than keeling over from the weight of the camera!!!!

Must have an aspirin and sit down .....

Cheers for all the ideas / comments.
