I am thinking of buying a monopod to assist me with macro photography. Interested to hear preferences whether useful having small legs or not. Advantages and disadvantages etc. I have a budget of approx £100 which hopefully will get a ball head also. Ideas welcome.

You need a tripod, a bean-bag maybe, but not a monopod.

My feelings exactly. You need absolute stability which a monopod helps but is not the answer, but when you are playing with a depth of field of millimetre proportions and needing precise focussing there is no substitute for a tripod. - A good one!

I have several tripods and they all become cumbersome in this vein. My question is because when I want to capture an insect, butterfly etc by the time I have set my tripod up it has flown away and I thought a monopod would be quicker. Also being able to rock or sway to compose and focus would help. Thanks though and interested to hear your thoughts.

have a look here for poss macro tripot options

I'd have thought that a monopod with feet would also be difficult unless it has a ball joint arrangement where the leg and feet meet as you surely be trying to rock backwards and forwards against the fixed feet?

What lens(es) are you considering using?

Along with the iFootage, THIS can be used as a table top as well and its cheaper
Thanks this could be the one.

The above has a ball joint at bottom which I guess would enable me to rock or sway. I shall be using a Canon 100mm f2.8 USM macro lens also Canon 70-200mm f4L.

OP. It looks like you're pretty much set on buying a monopod, and the 3 Legged Thing one addresses my objections, so good luck with the purchase, and don't forget to let us know how you get on with it.
