monopod advice please

i personally use a manfrotto 679b with a 484 rc2 head fairly light but sturdy,it does the job for me.

the 679 non"B" here, haven't got a head on it as all I use it with is the 100-400 and it's got a tripod collar. Perfect for that and a 1D combo.

I've got a Manfrotto one kicking about but I can honestly say it's never been used in anger, I tried it about the house a couple of times and found it very awkward. I suppose If I had something larger than the 100-400 then I might see a benefit but I can hand hold what I have without much difficulty.

I think the thing about monopods is that you want one with the quick release leggs and not one with the twist lock legs. Makes working with them much easier.

Also I like having quick release heads as I have a couple of lenses that I use a monopod with. Manfrotto make a pan and tilt RC2 head that is perfect for monopods.

I've got the Jessops 330 Monopod , has a QR head / legs and only cost me £19.99.

Manfrotto Neotec 685B - genuine one handed operation - very quick to adjust - love it.

The Manfrotto 680(B) is also very popular, it has four sections unlike the 679(B) which make it more compact to carry.

If you want this with the Manfrotto 234RC head (which uses RC2 plates) then there is a bargain currently on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180097315409

Normally you are looking around £40+ for the pod, £25 for the head, then delivery on top, yet this is only £60 in total and comes from a "proper shop". The eBay price also undercuts their own web site.

Michael.
