I tend to stick with colour when i convert my images in LR4, but recently had one or two which i thought would look well in B&W.

What is the best (most flattering) way of converting to mono in LR4 for people?

There are a lot of presets all producing different results. I know some look harsh and are to be avoided, but what is a middle of the road conversion? Should i use these presets or just desaturate and up the contrast?

All advice appreciated

I cannot get the conversion correct, however there are a number of video's on youtube which may help.

...and I'm not just saying that because I wrote it. To make great black and white images from a colour digital file, you need to take control of how the colours are translated to grey tones.
Thanks. That all makes sense, i just need to know when to stop tinkering, but i will remember your point about similar tones and keep an eye out for it.
