Morning all

I am thinking of moving from my current set up of two 21 inch dell ultra sharps to one single monitor probably around 27 inch.

I'm not buying brand new so looking at eBay most of this that come up are gaming geared, if we're looking for a monitor geared for photography what features would you look for?

Many thanks in advance for suggestions, I don't have a huge budget

John

as said above at that budget you're not going to get a lot. You'd probably find a 27" for that but it's not going to be very good and will probably be 1080p which I consider to lo res for that size, especially if you're expecting to get the same space as you do from 2 21" which I guess are 1080p also.

Hi the £60 is an eBay price not new, the driver is I don't need as much space as the two monitors due to a career change so I think 27 should be enough

If you just wanted a monitor then maybe but a decent one for photography is highly unlikely for £60.

Hi guys, what I was kind of looking for was key features to look for or specs really in case I come across something that meets those

IPS Panel
2560x1440 Resolution (you could get away with 1920x1080 but I think that looks a bit blocky at 27")

Good contrast ratio and as close to 100% SRGB as you can get.

Responce time not important really unless gaming so expect around 6ms

Why 27" anyway, you'd get a better monitor for that price if you looked at 24" I'd bet.

Just looking to some degree at the whole I have to fill, wanting to be able to have if possible two programmes running at once and might be able to on that size but not sure I would be able to on 23/24 inches

That's the point I was getting at earlier, just because you get a 27" monitor it doesnt mean you can run 2 programmes on it like you did with 2 monitors (well you could but it would just look big and awkward).

A lot of cheap 27" monitors are 1920x1080 which is probably the same as your 21", that means you have the same space to play with but it will look bigger on a 27".

You can get a 4K 24" (not at your price) which would be able to display the equivalent of 4 of your 21" images.. the problem then is you may find they look too small.

So if your idea is to get a 27" with the plan of running 2 programs like you did with 2 monitors then you'll be disappointed especially with a £60 budget.. you'll need to get one with a high res and that normally means more money.

If you really wanted to replace 2 monitors with 1 then youd be better off looking at an ultra wide but again at that price....

Hope that makes sense.

We used to have a huge iMac at work, perhaps it was 30 inches and I know I can't get anything that big under 3 figures

The iMac would have been 27 inch or at least thats the biggest they do.

If it was a new one then it may possibly have been a 4K or even a 5K so it's not a good idea to base your opinion around that (I use an iMac 5K for editing and it's a amazing)

Good luck with your search but don't rule out a 24" (like a good Dell) because of the size, its all about the resolution and panel.

No it would have been 2011 model I think so not that good

What's people's thoughts on the old apple cinema he display at 23 inches?

Can you sell your existing monitors to help get something better? TBH I'd not expect an old apple cinema screen to be any better than a 24" Dell IPS panel if it's like one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-Cinema-HD-Display-widescreen/dp/B0002ILKNQ

It would work, but not as a replacement for 2 X 21" screens - I currently use a 24" Dell ultrasharp at that resolution, and although it's bigger than the old Samsung 20" screens I also use, it's not HUGELY bigger.

Cheers mariner, saving it seems to be..

As Jase suggested earlier, I really think you need to move away from the external screen size but look at what resolution you want from the monitor. The external screen size is not going to give you the ability to run two programmes side by side.

However I use a 24" DELL 2415Q which is 4K resolution and I can happily run 4 programmes ;) often more.

Figure out the resolution, and go for an IPS panel.

i had a pair of the old apple 23" cinema displays up until recently, they're not bad. can be picked up for cheap 2nd hand (sold my pair with a few minor cosmetic issues for £150 or something). run at 1900x1200 (depending on model iirc).

i replaced them with a 2nd hand acer 29" ultrawide IPS for £170.

Cheers Neil, think I'm going down a similar route now
