Ok...

I have just sold my old camera...bye bye Panny fz30 !!!...

But got to spend the cash now so...WHAT TO BUY...???

Choices:

Canon 430EX II Speedlite
Sigma EF-530 DG

Jessops 300AFD
Jessops 360AFD

YongNuo YN460 Flashgun

I realise that some of these are auto set by the camera...a very good option for me...they have different guide numbers that seem to relate to the distances the flash operates to...

My Requirements:

To have a flash that I can use on the hot shoe...possibly with a gary fong type diffuser...I also want to be able to use it off camera for macro shots...and with a softbox arrangement...this may be preferred to be set up with two flashes...so this is why the range of choices/costs...

I will have about £200ish so a smaller budget...but xmas and my birthday are not that far away...

I know there are other bits cable wise and wireless/infa red adapter req...

SO THE GIST OF MY QUESTION IS...I SETUP THAT CAN BE BUILT ON...POSSIBLY ONE BIGGER PURCHASE...OR OTHER CHEAPER ONES...

BUT NOTHING IS OUT OF SCOPE...SO LET THE GOOD IDES CLUB THROW THEIR TUPPENCE WORTH IN TOO...

THANKS to all who contribute...

I have a YongNuo YN460 Flashgun, its ok for providing fill light, but compared to my 580ex there is no competition power wise, 580 wins by miles and miles. (obviously). I tried using it to light a subject using a softbox and it just was not happening... and that was with it a few feet away from the subject, at full power and iso 200. I would think the Canon 430EX II Speedlite would be a good choice, but since I have not used the others you mentioned I cant really compare sorry

Looks like the 'YongNuo YN460 Flashgun' would only be good as a fill flash then...anyone out there used this one@

NISSIN DI622 SPEEDLITE

A bit more expensive...so maybe more middle ground...

You're building a quality outfit, so get the best flash you can reasonably afford. The 430EX is very good. You don't need a 580EX unless you really need the extra power, or need to use its master controller facility in multiple remote flash set ups.

There are compatibility problems reported with some third party flashes on the 50D.

If you want to try remote multi flash strobisty stuff, your will need additional Canon E-TTL compatibile guns to retain full auto exposure control. Works very well, but very expensive. The cheapest way by far is to use Yongnuo flashes and RF-602 radio triggers in conjuction with the Canon 430EX, with everything set for manual exposure control.

Rob, the YN-460, with a GN of 33 isn't really intended to light up an 80cm softbox, so it's a bit unfair to slate it on that respect, nor is it fair to critisize it for not being as powerful as a 580 EXII (GN 58) or 430 EX II (GN 43), both of these flashes cost hundreds of pounds more.

I would argue that everyone needs a TTL capable flash, and if you want a reliable, hard wearing system, that is future proof and can be used off camera, the only option from your list is a 430ex.

One second hand, a fitp TTL cable (if you're still doing them?), a set of radio triggers, a fitp stofen, and maybe even a 7dayshop lightstand and fitp brolly adapter and brolly *should* all just about fit in your budget (maybe 20ish more)... and give you a great system for on and off camera use, that you can build upon however you like :)

+1

having A canon gun is v useful as it works perfectly on camera which other flashes won't always do. With toys it works great off camera and in a few weeks pick up a manual gun for second light .....

My post was not intended to slate, or critisize the YN-460 - I'v had one for many many months now, and I have found a whole number of uses for it.

However, I merely posted to inform the OP, since hes obviously looking to build up his off camera lighting, that when compared to other flash guns out on the market, it does come up underpowered, and will struggle to keep up.

For under £40, you cant really go wrong... i'd buy 4-5 if I thought I would use them... However since the OP mentions hes thinking about a 430ex, I assume he has the funds available to splash out.

Ok...I have made a decision to let the major flash purchase slide until after xmas & birthday...then go for a combo funded canon flash...430/580...depends how popular i am (gifts)...

I also have bought a 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar...manual lens...

So...I currently have a puffer type of diffuser on the popup flash...could this be temp supplimented by a FITP setup...YongNuo YN460 flash...lightsphere type diffuser from microglobe...microglobe chrome diffuser...

I know that i would also need either a chord or trigger arrangement...worth mentioning here that i shoot with...a Canon 50d (I know it can have issues)...the 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar...a 17-55 f2.8 tamron...70-200 f4 L...and a Raynox 250 for macro...

Now I have a spare velbon tripod...can this act as a light stand by using a fitment ???...or would i need to get one from 7dayshop...and just sell the tripod... ???

Gonna drop FITP a message...I also live close to him...major plus...

Those puffer diffusers are pretty poor TBH. They spread the light about in the hope that something nearbly will pick it up and reflect back some softness into the image, but the on-board flash is so feeble that when you spread it about like that it's next to useless. Main effect is to waste light and increase the recycle time.

The on-board flash could be used to trigger any remote flash with an optical slave built in, such as the Yongnuo, but considering how cheap the RF-602 radio triggers are that would seem like a better way - more reliable, more range, and you can then separate out the on-board flash if you don't want it.

Most flash guns (including Yongnuo) come with a little plastic stand with a tripod bush underneath so you can just screw it on to the tripod.

[Gonna drop FITP a message...I also live close to him...major plus...
