Missus has been looking for a new phone ( another thread), and we did look at what was suggested. Did a lot of reading up, and all write ups raved on about how the mobile phones takes great photos. How many lenses, great flash, and giving out silly sized pixel photos. But, what about the call quality, for actually making phone calls. The phone the missus has at the moment is terrible, very hard to hear person on the other end.

Went into the 02 shop the other day, this was to ask about a phone, and the quality of it, for actually making and receiving calls. He started to tell us what great photos it takes, we stopped him there, and took a magazine to take home and study. Got the magazine home and browsing it with a cuppa at our leisure, page after page of phones, all rambling on about what great photos and video, erm, what about the call function?

Seems the primary function of a mobile phone, is firstly as a camera, then as a games console. Does anybody ring anyone anymore?

Missus has placed an order for a phone, did read up on review sites about phones. All reviews says great phone, takes stunning images. If the call quality is poop, she can always use it as a camera. :-)

Looking at your other thread I think it me be the Huawei p20 or p20 pro, agree the camera on the p20 pro is very good, the phone it self is good too.

Yes it could be, I never show much interest in phones, had it of been a camera, I would be very interested. :)

Thanks for your input, by the way. Other thread.

It all boils down to signals. How good they are, really depends on anything interfering with the signal. Remember they use wireless radio waves, not plugged in landline cables.

One of the last phones we had sounded very tinny and faint, trying other peoples can sound crisp and clear, some can sound horrible also. Not just the quality of the service call, but the quality of the sound also. But not many people seem to bother with this, and rather more interested in the photos it takes, probably due to the fact of everyone sending selfies.

I use hearing aids... but with or without using them, the Huawei P20 pro is clear as a bell, far better than my Philips land line phone. (it is very good at the other stuff too, even has a three Leica lens camera)

No wonder camera sales are dropping off, when an advert comes on the tv promoting a new phone, first thing they bang on about, is the photographing capabilities of the phone, and nothing about the call features etc.

When people think about photos now, they think mobile phone. Can't even recall the last time I saw an advert on telly, promoting a camera. Only one springs to mind, is David Bailey and the Olympus Trip. :-)

That's good to know. Our hearing isn't the best either. :-)

If we were calling earth moving implements "earth moving implements" then a mobile phone should really be called "a pocket computer with communications, camera, etc."

Just thinking out loud... :tumbleweed:

Gets my vote, after all that is what it is.

It can be thought of more as a Personal Digital Assistant, as it is becoming the primary entry and control port for all our technology.
It handles all our communications and can sync with all our records on other devices.

I am sure either me or the missus, had a personal organiser, many years ago. Missus is buying her mobile phone, as a phone and not a camera. Primarily it has to make and receive clear phone calls. So long as it has a few apps, such as WhatsApp, and a few others, she is happy.

Just bought a new phone myself yesterday - the camera is about the least important feature I look for, I guess it's nice to have for those rare occasions you come across something interesting and don't have a real camera. The way I see it, most half decent phones now will have decent call quality, I've yet to use one where the calls weren't crystal clear. But, you say you have experienced this, does make you wonder if that side of communication on these devices has now become the add-on. The guy in the Vodafone store started telling me about the camera from the off, I had already done the research and specifically told him soon as I walked in which model I wanted to buy - don't know why he was trying the pitch, had my card out, knew what I wanted, didn't need the spiel. I do like the 'smart' side of modern phones though, I like to have a decent screen, fast processor etc and I will use a bunch of apps - I mean, as someone said they are more pocket PCs now, have been for a long time. So I will do a little research and try get the best bang per buck possible, but yeah, the camera is the last feature that will sway me.

The missus and I are in the later years in our life, and we are not really interested in phone games and all that faff. We both have cameras, although she only takes photos, special occasions, parties and events etc, so then she may use a camera. We will use a mobile phone to ring our friends, but children and grandchildren prefer they get a WhatsApp message, or other messaging thingy from us.

That is when we wanted to have a look at a mobile phone, the sales assistant who was probably our grandchildren's age, went on to tell us all about the wonderful photos they take. But what about making a call, should one of us need help, like the missus falls or something. When we asked, yes but what is it like to make and receive calls, what is the call quality like? They look at us as though we are mad, he is thinking, does it matter, it takes great photos of your lunch. :-)

I too had a personal organiser for a few years. But never got another when it gave up the ghost. I hope that. My Hewaei p20 pro will last my time out. As at 85 I am not planning on getting another.

Mobile phones get old quicker than cameras, and I am sure you will get to squeeze in another few updates. ;)

I had a Palm in the mid 2000s, and that didn't get replaced either. ;)

But for a man of 85 I have to say that you're remarkable Terry. (y)

Will they fit in a pocket.

I always have old hand me downs and every time I get one it's bigger than the last. Everyone I see now seems to have one about the size of a tablet computer.

Actually I don't think fitting in a pocket is a requirement now as most people don't seem to be able to stop looking at them.

We don't get a change to get our children/grandchildren's cast offs, they just don't look after their stuff. Their phone screens always gets scratched and smashed, and the phones are always falling to bits.

Yup and these upcoming generations are the ones blaming the older generations for squandering the earths resources.

People seem to believe I need/want one and although I'm happy they think about me I'm less happy with the hassle of setting the brand new second hand phone up and the fact that it takes up more and more room in my trousers or coat. If I don't use it they'll see I'm still using the old one and offer to set it up for me and of course I wont like what they do to it :D I only need a PAYG for emergencies when I'm out. I'm definitely not one of these who spends just about every moment of their life staring at one.

Easily, I never stick a phone in my jeans pocket though as they can break or bend so easily. But it'll go in my jacket pocket or in the pockets of the zip up hoodies or tops I wear to work. I hate having anything other than my keys or some change in jeans pockets.

My daughter has actually used my phone more than I have so far, I asked her to test out all the features camera etc as I can't be bothered, just to know if they're any good. Verdict is the cam is actually half decent, at least in decent light. Good to know, for that one image I'll take every 6 weeks :D

In the very early days of mobile phones, missus did manage to damage a brand new one. She went swimming, with her phone in her swimming costume. o_O

I have a "smart" phone but I don't have a data pack - on the (VERY) rare occasions I use it for web/e-mails, I use trusted wi-fi networks and that's only when I know I'm expecting an important communication. I've recently migrated to an Android phone from a Winphone but only because the old one has no support these days and its Bluetooth has fallen out!

I tend to wear cargo trousers which usually have at least one pocket big enough for a modern phone but I tried my sisters new phone and that was really too big. I don't like having phones in trouser pockets as they usually wrap around to the back of the leg so you're sat on half the phone or at least placing stress upon it. These days I try to buy trousers and shorts with enough pockets hoping to avoid having to take a bag but usually end up having to carry a man bag.

For me it's just one of the things that's turned into one of those little everyday annoyances.

My old Windows phone no longer works, it keeps saying "phone no longer updated, please change your phone". I am having the old cast off from the missus.

I did this too, brand new Samsung S6, barely had it a month - who thought it was a good idea to put pockets on swimming shorts!! Grrrr lol, I tried everything to revive it, towled it, stuck it in a bowl of dry rice, even tried the hair dryer .... nope. I brought it back to the store but they wouldn't do anything for me, there's a strip inside the phones that changes colour after water damage ... dang it

when i buy a pair of trousers i always check that it has 'phone friendly' pockets - there seems to be a trend of having very shallow pockets so the phone is half out of the pocket - i have an old nexus 6 phone from 2014 but it still works fine so in no hurry to upgrade it.

I have to say, I spend most of every day sat in a wheelchair with my phone in my trouser pocket. I have never sat on half of it or placed any stress on it, you must sit very peculiarly!

No bag under front of chair, and pocket for phone?

Many modern trousers have pockets that go under the buttocks, so keeping a phone in the back pocket while sitting is both uncomfy and risky. Like woofie, I like cargo trousers if I need to carry stuff like mobile phones and wallets.

*edit* - the pockets in the jeans I have on right now go right under my bottom when I sit.

never really seen any point in back pockets - have never put anything in them

Would certainly never keep a phone in a back pocket.

That didn't happen with me, in my very early days of mobile phone usage they didn't fit into pockets, they hung on shoulder straps:)
