I've been looking for a compact, preferably with an optical VF, to carry with me daily but had the mju recommended (though no optical viewfinder). Discussing its merits a member of my camera club told me of one being offered as a prize in a comp.

Do I enter the comp and hope for the best, or just go out and buy one (about £150), or is there something else more suitable out there (£200 max). Are there any reasonably priced optical viewfinder compacts that I can pocket without me being arrested? ;)

I've got an Mju 850 SW which sits in my shoulder bag so I always have a camera with me.... works for me. Obviously its not optical zoom, but I rarely use that anyway, I just choose to get closer to the subject.

I've also got an 850SW. So far mine has;

been dropped out of a moving car by accident (not by me)
dropped in a pond (not by me)
thrown about 30' onto concrete (that was me, slightly mashed up queing to get into global going for an over the head q-fail shot without the wristrap on)
stepped on (not by me)
stepped on by an aardvark (obviously not me)
used in a swimming pool (that was me)
dropped in a fish tank with the timer set (me again)

And its still going strong!! Amazing camera, produces some really sharp images. Only downside is the shutter lag and xD cards, but aside from that its one of the best compacts I've ever used.

I heard the 6010 is even better, and at the end of the day its about the same size as a cigerette packet so easy to carry on nights out and stuff. The only comparison I think would be one of the Ricohs like the G600, but thats twice the price.

You stand to lose nothing by entering so go for it and good luck!!!

I've got a Mju 770 SW which has never been dropped (by me or anyone else)
which HAS been dunked in salt water on many occasions and always rinsed off in fresh afterwards (by me)
which was great as a shirt pocket camera (I'm overweight and sweat in hot weather - not nice for normal cameras to be near!) but doesn't have an OVF.
Oh, I should mention that it's not waterproof now (or working), so I've replaced it with a Canon D10. (The Canon isn't as slim as the Oly but is (so far) waterproof.

I use a 770 in Work. Its been dropped on ships metal deck platesfrom 5m, submersed in oil, taken snorkling etc etc. Its spot on for work based evidence gathering and I love the macro. I use it to capture failure or evidence of neglect in mechanical parts used on hte kit I support.

I bought an MJu 800 something for the missus as she is alway dropping and breaking cameras......The casio she had before that lasted a few weeks before she broke the screen with it in her back pocket. The MJu survived pretty well. Until she lost it!

But I do love the MJu range as a general point and shoot. If the lens had a bit more reach, I'd use it a lot more for myself.

Don't get me wrong! Until the 770 transformed itself from a waterproof compact into a paperweight, I loved it! Just the right shape and size to drop into the top pocket of a shirt; decent enough images for a compact and (in theory, at least) waterproof to snorkelling depths. The drop proofedness was incidental - I tend to be reasonably careful with my toys as was the low temperature capability. Both traits are shared by the D10 Canon- again, as a side pair of benefits, not as selling points to me. FWIW, the pics from the Canon are nicer too (IMO) - the extra pixies might help, as may the straight optical path rather than the zig-zag one the Oly's thinness requires it to use.

Many thanks all for your information and experiences. The Mju is gathering pace on the highly possible front - lack of OVF isn't really an issue in the cold light of day, I'm just a bit old fashioned when it comes to viewfinders. ;)
