Missing Photographer - Devon

Saw this the other day, sad indeed but is very easy to get caught up in the moment, just taking that risk to get that good shot.
We live in hope but the longer it goes without finding him the hope, sadly, gets less.
Thoughts with the family.

A terrible story, it would unfortunately be easy to lose your footing and fall in the horrendously bad weather at the time.

I saw it on the news yesterday not looking so good, once you get that image in your viewfinder, its very easy not to see what going on around you, must admit nearly been caught out a few times myself like that :)

I have sympathy for his family and friends but none at all for the idiot himself. Over 100 people have put their own lives in danger looking for the fool who had ignored all the warnings. I hope he's found safe and well but then charged for reckless endangerment or whatever they can hang on him.

That's a little harsh don't you think? I do think the worst has happened to this young man given the horrendous weather conditions. My sympathies go to his family regardless of the folly or otherwise of his actions.

i just got back from being in cornwall over xmas and to say the coastal conditions were horrendous would be an understatement. Its like that drunk duffer that went paddling on new years eve never to be seen again. It only takes 1 brain cell to realise that when there are 20 foot waves crashing around you then you get the **** out of Dodge. The conditions were biblical and its just such a shame nuggets like this go and do stuff like that, putting rescuers lives in danger for absolutely no reason and bringing a lot of sadness to families.

just a young lad! ... we all do reckless things in our teens' i'm sure he didn't set out to put his own (and the many people looking for him) life in any danger!!!

Doesn't seem to matter how many times people are warned about safety they still take no notice

Of course its a shame, but no picture is worth dying for

A few post on here are simple laughable!... FFS you ones wearing the halo's must have short memories, had a very boring life or not been let out by mummy unless you were on a lead!

Being young and probably not been into photography for long he was just looking for a great shot, not intentionally looking to endanger himself or others.

Hope he gets home safely and thoughts are with his family

Indeed we do... and also when we are old enough to know better. I have had a few lucky escapes in good weather in situations which seemed like a good idea at the time. Bad weather as we are experiencing now can only make it worse.

Steve.

or just not be retarded enough to not recognise a life threatening situation.

I lived on the coast for a few years and saw the conditions that the lifeboat crew went out in to rescue dumbass people who very often ignored safety warnings

Big difference from taking a few chances as a teenager to being downright suicidal

I know the place (Yealm Valley) very well this chap went missing and can imagine just how dangerous it would be in that kind of weather. Some big cliffs on the coast path between Wembury and Newton Ferrers especially around Seasons Point

come on guys! ... a young man with a passion that we all share has lost his life (hope to be proved wrong but..)
give him and his family a break eh! ... words like RETARDED' IDIOT and FOOL can be a bit harsh at this moment in time

I agree, have a little respect and thats coming from someone who has recently put himself in the firing line to rescue people who ignore the warning signs, its all very well making judgements from behind the safety of your keyboards ! some of the best photos produced in living history had some element of risk when taking them

Yes but....all we know is he went to take picture, I don't believe in judging so until I know what he did then no insulting remarks will come from me.
I bet there's many who drove like fools when younger, did mad things as dare, drunk so much that they were staggering all over the road that now, when older and a bit wiser, suddenly become holier than holy

And too many people have died getting the pictures.

I have every respect for those who put themselves and their lives on the line rescuing people and feel that it's incredibly selfish to risk one's own safety in the hope (and expectation) that the emergency services and volunteer organizations will get them out of the brown smelly stuff when it hits the fan. As I said in my original post, I hope he's found safe and well (although the chances of that are fading) but I do think he should be held accountable for his actions.

Yes, I've done stupid things but not so stupid that a rescue would endanger others.

It's always easy to be wise after the event but I think part of the issue these days is that there are so many warnings given out in the media that people do ignore them and assume that health and safety do gooders are going OTT, obviously not the case in all situations but it does happen a lot.
How many times has there been a very light dusting of snow and people are advising us not to travel unless completely necessary?
I'm sure people make bad judgements all the time but unfortunately this guy looks like he has paid the ultimate price. Fingers crossed he gets found and big respect to the rescue crews looking for him in difficult conditions.

Unfortunately not. Search is ongoing according to local news.

I don't think many people go out thinking it doesn't matter if I'm careless the RNLI will save me, most people who have accidents are taking what they think is reasonable care but are caught out by something.
We can't go through life without taking some rissk, driving on the motorway is far far more risky than taking pics in a storm, but we do it every day, we can't all just stay in and hope we'll be safe in the house.
I won't put myself in harms way if I can help it, but it's not going to stop me having my life

Wow ...

I'm thinking the guy was most likely very safety conscious, and thought he wasn't in any danger, but just got caught off-guard by a sudden gust or mis-step on a slippery rock - thing is, NONE of us know, so best not be high and mighty about it. He may have been in an area, away from the "20 foot waves" that seemed to be perfectly safe.

I doubt in the extreme that he went out thinking he might slip or fall and never be found ... and certainly didn't have in mind that it would end up as a search party where others may be risking their lives to save him.

The "nugget" is most likely dead ... because he was passionate about his photography, and wanted to capture some exciting natural occurrences. He wasn't some random "drunk duffer". I'm not sure which is sadder, the loss of a young life or nasty attitudes from high-horse, know-it-alls who must never make a mistake.

I don't think MANY do but I'm pretty sure there are some that DO think that way.

Yes, motorway driving can be dangerous but it's unlikely to put the emergency services at mortal risk should it go breasts skywards.

Likewise, when I'm allowed, I shall continue riding my bike, again, unlikely to put others' lives at risk.

Now...if it was know one of these was missing then I can see why some would be irate at putting emergency services at risk.
(Seen on twitter)...even the environmental agency have been tweeting asking bbc, sky etc NOT to keep asking for people's photos of the high seas

Sky news are reporting that a body has been found. Still to be identified.

A very sad outcome and my thoughts are with his parents and family.

Very sad but probably better for the family that he's been found than to face the uncertainty of him being missing. We were in the South Hams today, on Blackpool Sands, not too far away from the area he went missing. Not quite flat calm but certainly not stormy. Plenty of evidence that there had been very high water - seaweed atop the beach, sandbags by the café and shop doors.

As above, thoughts with his family and friends.
