Hey everyone! Just started getting into film in the last year shooting on my parents Konica auto s2. Helped a friend clean out a storage unit and he gave me a Minolta XG1! Put new batteries in it and it works!! Only thing is there is a black strip in the view finder I didn’t see yesterday when I was given the camera. It is still there when changing out to a different lens. Anyone have any ideas what it is or how I could get rid of it? It’s pretty distracting and big in the view finder. Thanks!! I’m going to try to post a photo of it.

Have you looked at the underside of the screen? It should be easily visible with the lens off through the lens throat.

Hi and welcome to TP

Just a thought?

Its tagged appearance with 'straight' edges makes me think of the foam seals around the mirror.... In the mirror box.....under the pentaprism. Basically, if so the foam has rotted and is hanging across the lightpath?

Thanks for both of your replies!

It’s not noticeable looking inside with the lens off at all. I even put the camera on bulb and took a photo looking in and saw nothing in there. Tried to give it a little shake to see if it would move and nothing. So strange!

I will investigate further and keep you all posted. Thank you again!

Hmmm!

It is clearly in the lightpath of the viewfinder:-

Rather than be sited in the mirror box area it could be behind the Fresnel screen i.e. behind the screen and under the pentaprism (AFAIK film era SLR did not use pentamirrors?) ?

Or behind the viewfinder eyepiece?

Try looking at the underside of the pentaprism, from the front with the lens off (not on bulb as that would lock the mirror up, blocking off your view of the prism)?

Though tbh it does rather look as if it's between the viewfinder eyepiece and the prism... unless you can get the eyepiece out this might mean taking the top off, which is way beyond me!
