Hi, just bought a used sigma 70-200mm f4-5.6 lens for my Sony a200 and it initially worked took a couple of pics with it and then it stopped and now says shutter locked no lens attached when you try to use it. The lens is attached correctly and the kit lens works fine so any ideas welcome...

Thanks

Sadly not... After having more of a play it worked again but only on manual mode on the camera and with no autofocus so not sure what's going on with it. I'll try other settings incase it's a similar problem

70-300mm ???
These are notorious for stripped gears on the Sonys. They have cheap plastic gears and use the Sony screw drive. From what I can see Sigma shouldn't be selling them.
Sorry not much help I know.....

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens - the 'no lens attached' message indicates the camera is getting no response from the chip in the lens - so either the chip has blown since you first used it, or the contacts are dodgy.

Note that if you had the stripped gears problem, it would be quite obvious (I had this with a old, cheep sigma I got as part of a bundle once) - the lens gives a very distinctive 'chattering' noise as the gears fail to mesh...

I know that this is probably just one of those weird dreams that I have occasionally, but I am sure I read somewhere, that Sigma are going to look at all lenses under three years old which have problems related to gear stripping.
Has anyone else heard that one?

It's an old minolta fit lens so is way out of warranty and it's a 70-200 that you slide to zoom not twist... It works but now only in manual not auto and wont auto focus only manual focus

Obvious question, but you've not caught the AF/MF switch on the lens have you or altered something on the body ??

Have you tried moving the switch a few times to see if this is giving a poor connection ?

Have you tried another lens to make sure the body Is functioning properly ??

Don't suppose you know anyone else with a Minolta / Sony body so you could try the lens on their body ???

Otherwise sounds like it maybe broken ...

no other lenses work fine and it wont autofocus when its set to af... on manual mode it works ok but you dont appear to be able to control the aperture of the lens

Sounds like a fault with the lens then, maybe the motor or as others have suggested the gears have stripped.

Where abouts are you based ?

yeah guessing so, based in northants

Too fR away from us unfortunately as you could have tried FIL Minolta body to see if it worked on that.

Good luck getting it sorted
