just wondering do people, and to what amounts, charge for mileage going to/from an event/wedding/commission/other...? is it usually a 'within 20miles is x pence/mile and y thereafter'...?
of course with fluctuating petrol prices things are somewhat tricky to predict but just a rough guide is all I'm after :D
 
depends what you drive, but as HMRC allow circa 35p/mile I charge at least that, if not a pound if I can get away with it. Heck, with the amount of traffic jams these days it's often time sat in the car waiting rather than miles driven that costs the money.

Just remember to factor into your charges not only the running costs but also depreciation etc.
 
Car transport firms normally charge between 80p and £1 per mile. They're making their living from this and generally are driving bigger vehicles including trailers.

For milage I incurr in my own car for work I can claim 40p per mile.
 
I think the type of client makes a difference.

I would expect a social photographer to include reasonable travel in to their prices e.g. anything up to 50miles (one way) is free. Anything over this I would suggest negotiation arround the HMRC rate for the first 10K business miles (IIRC 40p per mile).

However, for commercial shoots I'd expect to work differently, clearly separating the cost of the photography, the cost of processing, the cost of the licences, the cost of travel etc. due to the ways business work.
 
As SimonTalm says Mr Inland Revenue says you can claim 40p per mile so that is what I would charge.. This more than covers fuel, depreciation, wear and tear etc.

Don't forget if you intend to make money out of your venture I suggest you add business use to your insurance.

oh, does that work out as 40p each way (80p) or 40p is under the assumption of there and back again...?
