Well done to Chris Packham for publicising this and shame on the TV companies for chickening out. It's quite possible that off-duty those policemen were hunters too.
A few years ago I went out to Malta as a Springwatch volunteer for 2-3 weeks. It was tough - out every morning before dawn, drive to a well-known hunting location or viewpoint, just being there to try and deter hunters. Then the same thing again in the evening. One morning we parked the hire-car at the location and we were lucky. Nearby were some thin strips of wood with nails (points upwards) hammered through and hidden in dried grass. Just feet away from our tyres. Another car had its windscreen smashed.
I tried to persuade Birdlife Malta to let me get involved as a photographer but I suspect I may not have had the same high profile as Chris Packham!
