Yes
I took a look just now..8.10pm...at the location of shipping traffic off Lizard/Lands End where I am and saw just how busy the English Channel is. Migrants do cross at night. Having seen this chart I'm amazed there haven't been any collisions. Having said the crew of many ships, probably including the ferries, wouldn't even be aware of a collision with such small boats or dinghies.

It's a fascinating website, thanks for linking

I'll be adding that to my tabs:)

The one I have used in the past because of its search function is

Doesn't it make you wonder how many of the migrant vessels don't make it but no one ever finds
out.

A logical surmise..........

The whole situation is a Gordian Knot of an issue!

It's the busiest shipping lane in the world, it shows just how desperate these poor human beings are to risk their lives every day to get here.
It really isn't that simple. The people who have already reached any other European country have already reached a place of safety and don't need to make that extra hazardous journey.

According to someone I know very well and who is a senior Immigration Officer at Dover, they are told by the criminals who arrange their transport that our streets are paved with gold and that they will be given a house and massive benefits as soon as they get here. The reality is that they are treated very badly and processed extremely slowly, but they don't learn the reality until it's too late.

I would like to see us taking more refugees but we are hardly a first place of safety.

Those who have valid reasons for choosing Britain as their refuge (existing family connections, British foreign employees, fluent English as their only second language) should apply at a British embassy or consulate in the first safe country.

Sneaking into Britain isn't showing respect for us as hosts and suggests that they are not people who would fit into our society.

The flight tracker is even more impressive, zoom out a bit and see just how many flights there are ant any one time in the world!!!

I have this one as an app on my phone.....

It does provide some interesting insights into air travel. At the time most notably the exodus from Afghanistan!

We've closed all official routes of applying for asylum until you're on our shores. So that's not an option.

This is a massive political and humanitarian problem, to which I don't have any answers - I just wanted to point out (in my first post) that these people don't actually need to come here because they have already reached a country of safety.

But, one thing that I am sure about is this. Our government should massively increase the resources needed to deal with these people once they have made it here. Right now they are largely housed in inadequate detention centres and poor "hotels". They aren't allowed to work (and so contribute to our economy) but they don't get anywhere near enough support. Even the small number of Afgan refugees, legally brought into this country by the Government, are in the same position and it's the local people who supply them with clothing and food.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of the situation, their applications for asylum should be dealt with in weeks, not years, and they need to be treated better.
