Just watching the Microsoft event livestream and the Surface Studio looks amazing from what I can see! 28-inch Pixelsense display, 32Gb RAM, 2TB Hybrid Drive, 980M GPU, haptic feedback and only 12.5mm thick, pricing TBA but can't imagine it's going to be priced within my budget unfortunately.

Foldable hinge so you could potentially use it as a Wacom Cintiq replacement I guess?

Radial menu controller looks pretty neat too!

I've linked the images from "The Verge" so not sure how long they will stay live

Finally a decent alternative to an iMac - however saying that it is more like a Mac Mini with a touch screen and fancy stand attached. Is this truly an AIO? Regardless of that, and regardless of the blatant Apple keyboard copy, it looks an interesting machine and Surface is really getting touch screen well integrated. I'm sure it will find some audience, doubt it is a very big audience unfortunately.

This is in no doubt a stunning piece of kit. Innovative and it looks stunning, I really hope that this is succesful and sales by the bucket load but i fear it wont be simply because it wont have an apple logo embezelled on it.

It does seem that microsoft has researched what the creative needs and delivered a wonderful product but have largely ignored what the consumer is willing to pay. A premium that largely only apple fanboys would part with.

Why the need to become obnoxious? Just why?

As highlighted by @neil_g just above you, just think about the components parts and how one could build something like that out of available components. Yes I agree it is a lot of money, but for those making money by using their tools it doesn't have to be too much, and is actually better value than the alternatives.

Still don't get why you have to resort to calling names in an adult discussion.

This looks amazing for designers (and for everyone else i guess)... top specs having GTX980M chip too. wondering what CPU's they using? interesting :)

Apparently, it's already sold out on pre-orders from what i've read... going to be new year before anyone can get their hands on one of these..... ??

As an 'Apple fan boy' I see this an interesting machine. I also see it as a good move that Microsoft are developing the touch screen family, offering a useful alternative to Apple who apart from the tablet models choose not to go down that route. Along with the Surface it gives consumers a choice, which is always healthy.
I personally prefer a desktop machine with traditional input and I chose an iMac, but that doesn't make me right or wrong. I look forward to more interesting developments which will no doubt in time filter down to the cheaper models giving everybody a chance to enjoy the technology.

980m last gen GPU... would be faster with a mobile 1060, have 6GB of vram vs 4GB and a good few hundred dollars less to produce. Bit of a stupid spec really..

Brining cost in line (or a little less still) could see an 1070m with 8GB of vram that'll perform on par with 970m SLI. And adding just an extra $100 to the mix could see an 1080m that's about as quick as 980m sli...

Companies like Microsoft need to be more on the ball with this sort of thing.

I imagine there would be a reason for the 980m. Maybe it's size or cooling or power requirements. Or just that manufacturing started before there were available resources of the newer gpu.

Either way it's still a very capable gpu.

I agree with Andrew - it's a slightly awkward spec considering that the new mobile gpus are better on performance and power. Probably was a question of manufacturing timing, but any 10 series gpu from the 1060 up would really have helped performance in gpu enhanced applications.

I just read the 1060m has a higher power requirement than the 980m.

It's also a pricier card.
Due to the vast performance increases the 10series has over the 9series, the fact this Microsoft product is a desktop type product that a couple of millimetres of extra room would easily sort for cooling purposes and the fact power will never be an issue on a product that plugs in to the wall I am still a bit taken back by their decision. Engineering samples would have been available months ago so anything related to time restraints could have been worked around.

It does look very nice but again low powered laptop components won't make this a powerful pc. Good enough yes but easily outpaced by a much cheaper desktop.

As above the 10 series gpu's are noticeable by their abscence and not a million miles away from their desktop equivalents unlike the 9 series.

Not meaning to be blunt or come across as an ass, but I think some of you are missing the point or target audience that MS are aiming for...

Does anything else on the market offer a 28" 4.5k Cintiq style capable display? No.. What about the style of an iMac in windows form? No

Truth is there are many iMac owners who have paid NOT for the MacOS experience but for the design as they have loaded windows on it, this is a very well done alternative that outdoes the iMac and offers true versatility at a pretty good price!

For anyone wishing to check, please spec a likewise PC with a 4.5k display and/or 28" Cintiq QHD, the pricing will be well over 2k and not too far off the Studio, and will likely be more unwieldy.

My wallet still says no unfortunately...

Power hasn't really been an issue for a long time, hence why apple are able to sell 3 year old components at premium prices.

indeed. looking at the benches on those GPU above for example there is only really a 15% gain to be had. it's the same with CPU, ive stuck with (and been advised to by a well known PC forum) my 2nd gen i7 because there just isnt a viable upgrade that offers a big performance jump for the cash.

as long as MS use something like the 4th/5th/6th gen i7 HQ mobile chips. i had a 4th gen i7 HQ in my precision laptop and that thing could go all day.

I'll price you up a much more powerful pc for £500 less monitor. When I'm back home tonight!!

But yes I agree about your point it is what it is and it is nice and like macs its not designed for high level processing.

I'm sure you can with compromises that aren't important to you. However when you do like for like I rarely see that it comes out as truly that much cheaper.

True and of course my species machine would look like a brick. Yet it would perform like an Olympian;)

Exactly, and use power like one as well :)

It is an argument often held with laptops as well, and whilst valid to a degree, it is hardly ever in the same kind of lightweight, low volume, long battery live package. If none of those things matter then there are plenty of cheap big generic cases cases available.

It was going from a laptop to a custom built desktop that really opened my eyes! Can't go back however crap they look!!
