I have never really been interested in using my 700d for video work, but the kids have recently been set some homework and we decided to do some filming for it. We did some practice filming but we noticed that the sound from the built in microphone was not that good with lots of noise from passing cars. So could someone please recommend a microphone that would improve the sound for a video to present to a classroom? We are not looking to spend a fortune. Would we need a hot shoe mounted type or a lapel type? We are a bit clueless with all the micro phone jargon. I notice some for around £30 on Amazon but don't know if they are any good. Hopefully it would be compatible with a canon 80d as well as the 700d as I was hoping to upgrade in the near future.

I would also like to know if anyone has any general advice for videoing using an SLR? Maybe some recommended you tube clips etc

Thanks in advance.

A cheap lapel mic from ebay will be better than the inbuilt one with all the noise from handling etc.
Also people tend to overlook sound at editing stage, you can improve considerably with the more sophisticated programs kike Premiere, even simply making it louder/quieter might help

Something like an ATR-3350 will work for you. The closer the mic to the mouth, the higher the signal to noise ratio. A camera mounted mic will help, but will still pick up on axis road noise.

Remember to record 30 secs or so with no talking. You can't have dead silence in your video and will need to wallpaper over any gaps.

Finally, try to manually control audio levels and set them so the voice is around -10 (or just yellow). Last thing you want is the auto gain turning up the noise when the speaking stops.

As for video. Set frame rate to 25, shutter speed to 1/50. Then tweak aperture and ISO to suit. If you can, focus manually to stop the lens hunting.

That's what I've been using (that and a Rode Videomic Pro, but that'll be out of your budget) and for the money they do a great job. 6m cable as well so plenty enough to get some distance from the camera but a better alternative would be straight into a digital recorder (Tascam, Zoom).

There's loads on youtube, just search 'DSLR video shooting/guides/setup etc' or similar and then choose the people that you like. Some are better than others, in my opinion, but the ones I like might not be the same as the ones you like.
