Micro 4/3 ?

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been on, mainly due to work. Anyways, we're off to the Caribbean in January to celebrate me reaching 50, and I fancy taking something decent.

My eyes have been drawn to either the NX100 or the Pen EP-L1. Now I will still be taking my 7D, but want to know if something like the cameras above would be smaller & lighter to take out for the day.

I'd also appreciate some feedback on the quality too.

Hi. Wow the Caribbean! ouch I just went a funny green colour. Really it all depends on what kind of photography your into. You might find yourself wishing for the 7d most of the time. one of the problems I have found with going to 4/3 is that the menu systems and controls are often a little bit different to the standard Canon DSLR. When I say different I mean harder to access in the heat of battle.. I have tried Sony, Olympus and most successfully Panasonic.

I'm not entirely familiar with either of the cameras you mentioned but would advise going to check them out in person before buying.

Just some random thoughts... Have you consider one of the underwater tough compacts now available. I have a couple of the Olympus ones and they are fantastic for messing about with on holiday.

Maybe look into a new lens for your 7d. A super zoom or a simple prime might loosen you up a bit.

The E-PL1 is a handy small camera for throwing in a bag (or even a coat or fleece pocket) with the kit lens. Have a look at some of the reviews, image quality at lowish ISO is very good, I don't have a 7D to compare to, but the E-PL2 compares favourably with the 450D and 40D.

There's a massive 3/4 thread on this very forum.

I'm happy enough with my lowly GF1 and G1 and find that upto ISO 1250 things are fine. At 1600 and above depdending upon the subject and lighting you have to work harder but they're still useable at 3200. The newer G3 and GX1 seem to be a stop better and ahead of the best Oly's according to reviews. Oh, and with all of the controls available I almost never have to venture into the menu's.
