Mexico (Guadalajara) anyone been?

My daughter is in Guadalajara for a year with uni, so we are going to visit her early October.
She'll be busy, but we'll spend a long weekend with her at least, and hopefully more.
But.....
What else shall we do, where shall we go - I'd love to see some of the historical stuff, pyramids etc, or visit some desert-like areas, but both are on opposite sides of the country.
A couple of days on a beach might be nice, but it's a long way to go for some sand, and here in Cornwall we have lots of it anyway.
If anyone has any experience or wisdom to offer I'd be very grateful!
 
I've only been in Mexico City for business, but would recommend trying to find genuine Mexican food. I had some great lunches whilst there, thanks to working with a local IT manager.

That's very high on the list. My daughter is living with a Mexican family so we are hoping that she's finding out places to eat already!
 
I kind of thought that there would be more replies to this - surely some of you have been to Mexico?

I think you'll find that if anyone has been to Mexico, as my wife and I have, it's likely to have been to Cancun during a Caribbean cruise and that can't really be called 'visiting Mexico." We visited the Mayan ruins.....the sacrificial pyramid..that was people not animals. We were within about 10m of a huge Iguana sunbathing on the rocks above the ocean,too. Quite an experience. I assume they are used to tourists gaping at them.
 
The England team were based there in 1970, hot and high altitude if memory serves.
I remember collecting Esso World Cup Coins and Bobby Moore nicking a bracelet (allegedly)
That save from Banks and Bonetti having a football size hole in his hands.
I didn't care that much, still on a high from the O's winning the 3rd division title

I was there in 2013, visiting my daughter in Mexico City where she and her partner were teaching in an international school.
The Mrs and I are not into beach resorts, so we explored Mexico City and made trips up north to San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato where there is a lot of history from Spanish colonial and the battles for Independance and the Mexican revolution.
There is also older history of the Aztecs and other older cultures and the pyramids at Teotihuacan just outside Mexico City.
We also visited the Casa Azul, where Frida Kahlo lived, and the house where Leon Trotsky lived and was assassinated, in Mexico City.
Definitely an interesting place to visit. If you go off the beaten track not many people speak English, so it is best to have someone who speaks Spanish with you.

Thanks for that, interesting stuff. Daughter is learning Spanish and as we lived in Spain both my wife and I have a basic understanding and can communicate even if we don't have the words, which is some ways makes for more communication...!
 
Check on the differences between Spanish Spanish and Mexican Spanish. I have a feeling that it's fairly easy to make the occasional gaffe!

I've spent an entire life making gaffes...!
 
Most of Guadalajara is absolutely beautiful. The food is awesome.

I was out last night with my camera club and guy chatting to a lovely couple, one cornish and the other South American. Within a minute I'd been offered a glass of wine and very shortly after they told me how much they loved Guadalajara, had been 6 times and said exactly what you say, beautiful place, amazing food!
Tequila train is deffo on the list!
 
Just make damn certain it's not YOU pulling the train...

And take plenty of water with it!
