We're thinking of going away at the end of May for 10 days and quite like the look of Mexico, maybe Cancun or somewhere similar.

As we're taking the boys (11 & 8) All Inclusive is looking pretty good but I just wanted to know if anyone had experience of these types of holidays. Any first hand knowledge would be much appreciated!

Having grown up less than an hour from the Mexi/Cali border, I'm quite familiar with Mexico, but not so familiar with organized trips. ;) Steer clear of Tijuana at all costs. LOL.

Cancun is nice. I would avoid Puerta Vallarta, as it's become ridiculously expensive and is completely devoid of anything not tourist-related. Cancun isn't quite as bad.

Have a margarita for me. Oh, wait, I have margarita mix in the fridge. ;)

I've been on an all inclusive before, well worth the money. My wife, daughter and myself went with another family of four so having meals, drinks etc included was a god send.

I must be honest that i've not done it again nor would i again because i'm the sort of person that likes to get out and about, walking etc and not spend 2 weeks lying by a pool or on a beach getting sand in my bits.

Value for money wise you can't beat all inclusive though.

I'd agree with all of that apart from not doing it again. Two weeks slobbery with a couple of books and a constant supply of beer is just fine by me ;)

The only thing I'd add is make sure you don't go for the cheapest option, go for a decent hotel. The second time we went all inclusive it was one of those last minute deals and the food was rubbish, we ate out half the time. The next time it was superb.

My bro who likes beach/activities, regularly holidays in that part of the world, so I asked him for you, this is what he said....

We always go to the Riviera Maya its a lot quieter and more untouched and a lot closer to the Excursions like Tulum, Xel-Ha, Chichen Itza and Xcaret. its about 1.20 minutes from Cancun airport.
The next big place is Playacar and Playa del carmen a bit more livelier and a bit of a town but still very nice and about 45 minutes from Cancun airport.
Cancun very built up with load of big hotels bars and night clubs but load to do there.
In March and June American students party there and there is thousands of them they say. Time from the airport about 15 to 20 minutes.

The Dominican Republic and Cuba is very nice to and they love the kids there to.
