Metz 58 AF-2 and Yongnuo 622N Trigger

I'm sure the 622s will at least fire the Metz gun, the question is more about full functionality.

I don't know if this is helpful, but there's a huge thread on the YN-622 triggers on POTN. It's about the Canon version though, and is a mere 3000 posts long, but there's sure to be something about compatibility in there. Poster 'CliveyBoy' is the expert on these triggers.

Hmmm, this is interesting, from Flash Havoc: http://flashhavoc.com/yn-622n-nikon-ittl-trigger-full-details/

Hi Peter,

The YN-560EX are single firing pin only (on the flash foot), so connected to anything via the foot they will only operate as completely manual flashes with no remote control. So you can still fire them on the YN-622N, but you have no TTL or remote manual control.

While the YN-622N are running via radio, you don’t have all the regular CLS pre-flashes to trigger the 560EX optically either. So again its basic manual firing only. The YN-560EX (and now the new YN-510EX) are a great bargain for the CLS optic wireless system, but moving to radio is where you reach their limitations. Thanks.

So, as I read this, the YN 560EX (or YN 510EX) is a bargain (under $100) and works great in Nikon's CLS but not so using the 622-N. For that you need to go to the 565 which is almost $100 more.

If I'm using the 622-N to trigger my CLS Master flash camera (either my SB 700 or Metz 58 AF-2) I thought I could continue to use the CLS Master function to control the 560? But you'd think they would have mentioned that in this discussion?

Thanks for the link Hoppy - lots to read, but when I searched for Metz I found ONE reference. But I did see that it is listed as a Class I compliance in that Cliveboy's manual. It does more than my camera can manage (found that the D5100 does not do HSS - or that's my current understanding). But if the Cannon version is any indication then the 622-N should be good. BUT now I've noticed the new 622-TX - Hmmm, maybe I should wait on going to radio trigger and just stick with Nikon's CLS for a while.

Question for you 622 users.

If I put a 622 onto my D5100 and the receiver on my SB700 - can my SB700 still act as a Master in Nikon's CLS system and control the Metz 58 as a slave to the SB 700. Or do I need to get anther receiver for the 58?
I am also looking at the YN-622N-TX which could be the answer to control both my flashes. That would not offer much more than I currently have with my CLS, besides overcoming the limits of an optical system, e.g. working outside in brighter light and over greater distance. I suppose if I'm going to go wth 622 might as well buy a pair and see how they work. Noticed you can get pairs and sets of four. I would need three - or two 622N's and a 622N-TX. Until I buy a third flash :)

No. You need a second receiver for the Metz 58.

With the 622, the transmitter unit on the camera becomes the master/commander unit. The remote SB700 has to be in slave mode. You could get another flash to fire off a suitable optical slave, but not really worth it considering the modest cost of another 622 receiver.

Understood.
Thanks for clarifying that.

That's good to know gadgeteer - love your tag - I'm afraid this gadget getting game is rather addictive. Playing with my Yongnuo time lapse gadget today, trying to document laying a new vinyl plank floor. But it is not working like I think it is supposed to work. But hope to have some fun with it.
