I recently bought a big Metz flashgun secondhand. Super-powerful, has a rechargeable battery pack, and is for use off-camera with a wireless trigger via PC cord.

Anyway, I have no idea at all how the big dial works on it. It has settings for 'M' 'M1/2' and 'M1/4' which I'm guessing are manual modes. Are there any other ways of setting it manually?

Or, does anyone know of a downloadable user manual?

Thanks.

M = manual full power, M1/2 = 1/2 power, M1/4 = quarter power. If there aren't any other M settings then that's your lot as far as manual goes m8.

As I am in work, I am not too sure but I think I have the 45 CL-4 (non digital). Powerful unit. However, I have been warned that it is too powerful for use with our DSLR's. You need to bottom out that argument with Canon or Metz. I think it was someone from Calumet who advised me. From memory, he said it could fry my camera. Unless of course it is a second-hand digital version - which is fine.

However if he uses it off camera and wireless it's only the wireless trigger that needs to be matched, the flash won't be connected to or fired by the camera directly.

Some of the earlier Metz flash's can reach 600V on the trigger voltage, I think the Metz 45 CT-3 is around 6 - 6.5V on the trigger voltage, You need to double check it with Metz and check the trigger voltage limit of your camera as some models are different from others, as your using off camera that wont be a problem.

Thanks for the warning, but it'll only be used off-camera, and my triggers are expendable!!

I’ve used my 45CL-4 with film and digital just get the correct SCA adaptor from Metz and all should be fine.
