Yes
just searched for the information on the metering on this camera. came up with the following

Metering Modes TTL full aperture metering with 35-zone SPC
(1) Evaluative metering (linked to all AF points)
(2) Partial metering at center (approx. 10% of viewfinder)
(3) Center weighted average metering

does this mean i cant chose where it meters (ie sky only).

i should really read the manual .

thanks in advance

If you change your custom functions you can change the focus button to the * by your thumb.
You can then frame and expose for the sky and lock the exposure with the shutter button half pressed, then re-frame and focus with * before fully pressing shutter button

Sorry Matt, don't know if the above is possible in the 1000D but I'll run through it in more detail (rather than my fingers working quicker than my brain).

Normally if you depress the shutter button to focus and keep it pressed you can lock the exposure - meaning if you recompose the frame the camera still has the settings for the original exposure. Unfortunately to refocus (if you need to) you have to release the shutter thus losing the exposure lock :(

The way I get around this is by changing my Custom Functions - specifically custom function 4 to setting 1 - on my 350D this changes the settings so that when I half press the shutter and hold it locks the exposure but I focus using the little * button I have on the back of the camera body

Hey presto I can lock the exposure and still refocus once I reframe :)

hopefully it will make more sense explained in full
