Metering for ND filters

I have just started using ND grads for landscapes ( Coking P series ) but I am a bit puzzled. I want to hold the sky back and retain foreground detail. The question is, how do I meter for this.
Could someone talk me through the process. Any advice welcome!

Are you using in camera metering? I did and just let it get on with it

Hi Tina. Yes I am using the in camera metering. Tried a few shots over the weekend and the results were disappointing. I am getting rapidly fed up faffin about with settings!!

what i do is take a meter reading for the sky,then for the foreground..work out the difference between the two in stops,and use the appropriate ND filter.
