metadata icons

hi, i'm on my last of 10 lessons on lightroom 3.

after importing the four photo's to work on, it seems the "metadata file needs to be updated" icons aren't there. in their place are "photo is missing" icons instead. i've searched thoroughly in lightroom to find the missing photo's, in vain. everything i try comes up empty. it seems strange as i can see them clearly on my screen.

one of these four photo's i have managed to change to sidecar, but it doesn't help me at all.

i've searched the book closely but cannot find anything about it. its very small and easy to miss.

can anyone please help me get out of this muddle.

Click on the ? and locate the original photo in your computer (probably in My Pictures).

No point in looking for it in Lightroom as it has already told you it's not there.
