Hi,

I just got a message from Lightroom suggesting that I upgrade my catalogue to be able to access new features in the latest version of LR. I remember reading that it might be wise not to do this immediately in case there are any bugs. (I think it was the Lightroom Queen).

Would it now be safe to upgrade the catalogue?

I did about 10 of my catalogues last night after the latest updates and all went fine without issues.

Thanks. I remember thinking .....mmmmmm.... I'm not sure how useful any of these new features would be to me. Any thoughts?
I upgraded due to the promised better performance. I dabbled with the assisted culling for about 5 minutes, but quickly switched it off. I think it could be useful for portrait photographers for checking for open eyes, and sharpness of the facial features, but it was useless for my motorsport images.

The performance does seem to be slightly improved for my workflow, and I noticed that it doesn't seem to get as laggy if the catalogue includes video files whilst nvigating through. Previously, I've had to restart LR after 20-30 minutes to restore performance. The list of updates in LR did list improved memory management on windows, but it wasn't mentioned on the Adobe website when I checked for more detailed information.

From my limited testing you may as well just flip a coin or run randomizer

All the images I tried it with were given the same focus sharpness score (I think 82) regardless of whether any of the subject was sharp or not so the results were of absolutely no help. I think what would make a difference (and will hopefully come in later releases), is for the culling assist to learn from which images I Pick, and which I reject and then apply same criteria to new imports. Even hiding the ones which are badly blurred or where I've accidentally taken a random photo of the ground or sky whilst walking around would help :)

I suspect it is one of those things where it doesn't work particularly well now - but by adding it and then developing it over time it should improve until one day it might actually be useful!

The reviews, I've seen (only two) of the culling feature is that it's useless for portraits. In one, where the files had already been culled, LR rejected around half of the files identified as 5 stars, and selected about 50% of the files that had been rejected.

So as @LongLensPhotography suggested, it seems you might as well toss a coin.

EDIT: it may well be useful for something like corporate headshots, where you might have large number of pictures that are essentially identical, and culling out the unsharp/and closed eyes could be useful.

That's a bit of an eye-opener. I wouldn't use that feature anyway; I like to have absolute control if possible.

It will improve or they will buy out one of the other companies who already do this well like Aftershoot.

Well, after re-booting my PC last night I can see that I've lost two sub-folders in my Lightroom catalogue. It looks pretty random. One doesn't matter and I've deleted it, the other contains some irreplaceable shots of woodpeckers dating back to 2017! I suppose its there somewhere but how do i know where to look?

If they are missing from your Lightroom Catalog, how do you know that they are not there any more? If you have the image files, but folder is missing from the Catalog, If it is this, you may be able to import it from a catalog backup, though I have never tried it from a previous version.

Or do you mean you can see the folder in the catalog still, but the image files are not on disk? That *should not* be related to a Catalog upgrade - but check your file backups.

I've managed to get LR to refind the missing folder, by using "Find missing Folder" . I've never understood how this works but it has.........
